Serious case of bat abuse
« on: April 20, 2013, 07:31:20 PM »

Now, this post contains graphic images that may upset some people.

Today my mate asked me to "have a look at" his bat. As I enjoy working on them I said yes. What I was given shocked me, I do not understand how he let it get into this state, but I will show you what I was asked to fix up. He removed the scuff sheet that had been on the bat for 4 years and realised he was over in his head I think.

I am trying to fix it and will show you the final outcome.

Did your friend pull the scuff sheet off length ways?

He wouldn't tell me how he did it but it looks a lot like he did, shame really as it was a nice bat before he butchered it  :(

Think it's been under the scuff sheet it came with for 4 years and he decided to oil it, ripped the scuff sheet off and it was a little but worse for wear. Will keep me busy for the week anyway trying to sort it!

Lovely shape. Have you thought about sending it back to Gray Nics?

Having seen some of the work they do its definitely worth the money.

He doesn't have the money to spend on having it done at the moment so my garage wa the only real option for him. I'm looking forward to the challenge of trying to fix it if nothing else. (And of course the incredibly thankful friend, who won't just grunt "fanks" when I return it)

A couple of tips; make sure you get plenty of glue into the cracks and take your time when finishing, go through the grades of sandpaper and use some bat wax to finish.

Best of luck! And keep us updated with how it goes.

Gotta admit I was all ways a big fan of the GN Powerbow, must've been due to Chris Gayle pummelling the Proteas for 300 odd with one  :(

This one looks a very nice bat, until your friend 'modified' it  ;)

I'd used it a couple of times when it was newer and it was a blinder of a bat, shame he decided to decapitate it, hopefully I can save it!

If it still goes as well as it did I might tell him it's beyond repair and keep it. I'd be nice and give him one of my spare bats to 'replace it'  ;)

What a difference a day makes!

Yesterday after an initial sanding

Glued and had no suitable clamps so used a ratchet strap. Did this twice on both the major cracks on the face.

After taking the "clamp" off

Final sand down using fine grade of paper

And the lovely blemished face showed nicely after a coat of oil
