Watched some knocking in videos with conflicting opinions about the edges

Do you glance off the edge, hitting from the face or hit it at a 45 degree angle?

Roll the handle of the mallet up and down the edge at 45 degrees to the face.

Angle. Some people use the edge of the bath or a rolling pin to curve the edge first.

Used to work an edge randomly. Now I use a rolling pin on the edge (10 mins each edge) then an hour - 90 mins each edge from varying angles usually covers it.

I always thought you weren't supposed to strike it at 45 angle?! Also rolling the edges is only the inital bit, still needs a mallet knock in after this.

What you're trying to do is compress and round the edges to stop breakage when a ball hits it. if you only knock from perpendicular to the face, you don't really stop this risk occurring.

Indeed Tim - it's all about getting rid of the 'sharp' edges! The 45 degree sharp edges which a hard ball is likely to crack!

Perhaps I�m confusing this with striking the edge square on. Completely understand the need to compress the edges and round them off.

Roll a stump or rolling pin over the sharp edge on the front and back

Then gently tap the front edge with the mallet

I use two mallets, first use a flat mallet then I use a rounded mallet and surprisingly it's like the flat mallet didn't actually do anything!!!

Get a more rounded edge mallet but don't hit it too hard or you will get some compression cracks.

You can really smack the round mallet after using the round mallet and then go back to the round and hit it a bit harder until the rounded mallet doesn't make any marks.

Takes hours but your bat will be the envy of anyone that taps up with it

Never strike the edge straight on, you will just get lots of dents and leading edges don't cause any damage in a match
