Bat purchase selection advice required please
« on: April 29, 2013, 07:43:37 AM »

Hi

It seems this site automatically makes you the one to go to when they need a new bat now...

Anyway, there's a lad at my club looking for a new bat and is quite particular with his choices.  You may notice that there may be the odd contradiction in his requirements. He currently has a GM 808 Epic I think (the orange one).

What'd be the best bat choices I could advise him on? I am not looking at buying a bat at this moment, but may depending on what advice is given.

- Low middle/swell position as he likes to drive
- Light pick up (feeling 2'8-9ish like his current GM)
- Weight 2'11-12ish (what his GM is now)
- Not too ugly with grains/blemishes doesn’t have to be perfect
- Minimal concaving
- High spine
- Not too bothered about edge sizes (nothing to small though)
- must be a good performer

I think he’s have a price of around £100, give or take.

As he is already using a GM, I assume he is fine with the brand. In such a case, I would go with the Argon or the Icon 606. The Argon has quite a low middle and feels really good on the drive. However it does have a slightly heavier pickup than the Icon which has a really long middle so can be used comfortable on the front and back foot. Both should be able to meet your friend's needs.

I'm not sure if he can get a custom bat made in that price range - might be worth checking out because nothing beats a bat made specifically to one's specs.

For that budget, I would look at what MSR can offer him, or have a look in the for sale section as some nice bats around at the moment
