Intimidation of umpires
« on: May 07, 2013, 02:21:24 PM »

This really annoys me when a bowling team starts trying to intimidate an umpire into giving a decision their way.  Especially in a friendly, with a colt learning to umpire.
Doesn't matter if it's out or not, trying to intimidate umpires is just wrong full stop.

It happened to us on saturday, the oppo started trying to intimidxate one of our colts into giving a decision their way.  He didn't give the decision, but eveery time from then, they tried to bully him into giving them something.

What are people's suggestions to dealing with this?  Especially when the opppo skipper seems to be the main problem?

The only thing you can do is have your skipper seal to him if that does not work then they only other option is if the colt does not like the situation then change the umpire to an adult. Would normally then stop.

Gets my back up as well this, also when they appeal for every thing that hits a pad normally with there own umpire until the umpire thinks well they have appealed X amount of times this one must be out.

Not quite the same scenario, but we played a game against a team that was mostly from a specific region of India, and a couple of our players were from a different region. One of them, a bowler, had gone out to umpire and was subjected to a vast amount of verbal abuse, in Hindi. He turned around to them, warned them about their behaviour, and when it continued, walked off the pitch, for one of us to go on and (not speaking Hindi) ignore them.

At the innings swapover, their captain was informed that we weren't impressed with their behaviour and we would be reporting them to the league. Ultimately it made no difference.... They did the same thing to every other team in the league and the admin of the league did nothing.

Send an adult out to bat and get him to talk to the kid umpiring and the oppo.

I remember this happening 25 years ago in a friendly against Eastcote. They got 180 odd and we came out to bat. I think I had agreed to umpire the game and gave one plumb decision fairly early. One of our older players, Martin Hawkins (father of the inventor of hawkeye  - paul hawkins btw) came out to bat. Martin was an expert at winding up the oppo but this time he turned to me. "Don't let them intimidate you, they think if they scream in your face you'll give it, don't let them bully you" and so it went on. Funny enough Martin got down the other end and was struck on the pad, "not out" I said. Martin plonked his front foot across by habit and must of been hit a dozen times, "not out" each time. It got to the point where Martin was almost laughing at the bowler and the bowler was in tears. Marlow won btw!

Both the skipper and myself were batting at the time.  We had a word with their skipper, but that didn't help.  Soon as I got out, I replaced the kid umpiring and gave decisions as strictly as I would in a league game (I'm usually quite lenient in friendlies)  they got the message from that and soon shut up.

Any comments to umpires is completely unacceptable. It doesnt happen in the pro game so why do amatuers feel the need to do it. Facial expressions of disappointment/suprise or amazement are ok though!

Anyone in my team or at the club i coach who gives an umpire any back chat is automatically dropped for the next game irrespective of how good they are. Nobody has been dropped in 4 years i ahev been coaching.

However im all for talking to the umpire over a pint after the match to let him know that you thought you werent out because of xyz, a lot of them actually appreciate given the chance to explain their decisions and its amazing how many marginl decisions go you way if you have a history of respecting umpires.

if the other team is lead my an idiot of a captain i suggest you dont have anymore friendlies with them. Intimdating youngsters umpiring is a bit of a joke, what sort of fool does this!!

Could you not stop the game and have a stern word with the oppo's captain.

I've had this a couple of times as people think they can bully umpires especially youngsters and winds me up as if I see it ill have a word then if it doesn't stop a firmer approach is taken where they are left in no uncertainty that if it continues they won't be able to eat the after game chips usually stops then
