Is it ok to use different weighted bats?
« on: May 13, 2013, 07:46:59 AM »

Say one day use a 2'6 in the nets then next nets go to 2'10?

Or is it only straight after you use the bat the timing is off?

In my view I dont see how you can time the ball the same and play the same types of shots with 2 different weighted bats. Its bound to effect your game. I am a firm believer in when I get a bat I use it for nets and matches until it breaks.

Most of the guys I know who have played first class cricket would agree with you. They net in the same gear with the same bat they'd use for matches .

Makes absolutely no difference to me. I use all sorts of different bat weights. I had my best season ever 2 seasons ago, when I didn't have a bat, and used whatever I could scrounge!

agree in some respects. It's pickup that's more important. I have a 2'7 and a 2'10 that feel exactly the same in terms of pickup. The 2'7 has a lower middle and picks up worse than my higher middled 2'10. In terms of shot play they do the same job but the track might determine which one I use. I have another at 2'11 that I use for t20 but it's not much different from the 2'10, perhaps a tad heavier in actual swing but not so different from the other 2 bats.

An ex team mate (openner) used to swap bats during his innings. He'd start with a heavier bat and then after he'd scored a few, switch to something lighter.

It seemed a bit mad to me, but he finished the season with an average of over 55!

I am no coach nor a good player, but I do take an interest in this type of thing and can repeat what other say.
In a similar way that golf coaches have lots of differing views the same can be seen with cricket in terms of what you do different with the kit you use in practice.
Baseball you will often swing heavier bats or two bats in the view that you will find you match bat lighter in the game situation.
Some cricketers do that. calling wood being seen with what looked like a 4 lb club in practice a few times.
Most, I would guess use very similar, but " lesser grade" bat in the nets , as to not use up the good willow in practice.
some don't care either way and will use whatever, when ever.
More batsmen now have different bats for different situations, i.e. T20, or different batting positions or needing to finish a game off quickly and will practice these different requirement sin the nets with different bats. I saw something the other day where Chris Nash of Sussex said he did this, but sometimes he would pick a heavier or lighter bat for practice " just to keep me thinking"
I guess in short... Whatever works for you. First thing is to practice, then fine tune what works

I guess using different weights can justify more bat purchases!

I normally use the heavier bats for netting. My maximum usable bat weight is 2'10/11 so it works fine and I'm sure helps my bat speed when I go down to the 2'7 in matches. Use the lightest bat for proper innings, where I'm (potentially) spending a long time at the crease. That said I've used the 2'10 for an entire innings before without any issues. The heaviest bat tends to come out for quick run scoring or short stay innings ie. finishing off an innings.

How does this sound?

I have a 2'5oz bat for the ball on a rope/backup net bat
2'9/10 for nets
2'8 for game?

i would say very few people could tell an oz difference in a bat- even after batting for so long. its pick up which would cause issues. if you go from a 2lb8 to using a 2lb 13 then i would say it would cause an issue but 2lb 9- 2lb 10 isnt a problem.

i always use the same bat for matches and training. dont seen the benefit of using something different to train with and then not being comfortable at the crease. only time i use something different is my middling bat which is made to the same weigh, pick up etc as my match bat.

I use a 2'14 bat for start of nets, then my match bats vary from 2.10- 2.12.

I will use a match bat last 4 weeks of netting so I can acclimatise to that.

after the winter without netting I find it good to build up some strength and muscle memory

I have two bats to my name at the moment. I use one at a time and when this one eventually goes then the other one will be used.

I don't see the logic in using so many different bats at once!

I'm personally another one for sticking with a bat through games and nets until it breaks. Might be something in my head but it just doesn't feel right in the hand when playing shots otherwise!
