Seriously, why do some (?) bats deteriorate in performance over time?

Well this is one of the more erudite threads on here!

Tim, is that ginormous signature really necesary - it makes it look like you've written far more than you actually have?

Thought this had happened to me a couple of years ago, turned out I wasn't timing the ball at all, One of the high points of my cricketing life  :D .

The responsiveness is knocked out of them?

Willow naturally deteriorates over time, roughly after 1000 runs, so after that its a down hill slope to plank town!

bays last more than 1000 runs, that is a salesmans chat.
you can get 2000+ from a bat, just fine

I wonder how many people on here keep a bat long enough to score a 1000 with it?  :D

I gave 1000 as a it's the number quoted by most by the point still stands that it will naturally deteriorate over time!

The bat face gets compressed through use over time, reducing its responsiveness.

You can prolong the life of the bat by sanding the face before/after each season and applying a bit of oil to keep the willow supple and not lose its moisture (moisture loss = plank)

I thought oil 'sealed the sap'?

I always thought a thousand runs was an approximation of how long bats would take to break.

You can get more than 1000. I got 2500 runs in 2 seasons out of my mH distinction and now it has split. Probably due to it drying out
