Run Outs - 4 in one innings, I was involved in 3
« on: June 02, 2013, 11:43:43 AM »

I used to be extremely quick between the wickets but having rest of the team not in the zone I have taken a cautious approach this season and I am turning down the risky singles yet I was run out yesterday. The batters seem to be completely out of sync with each other and we are running when we shouldn't and not running when we should.

Through out the innings I have said to other end to call loudly and stick to it whether there is a run or not. If in doubt let the run go but don't get run out. Also stating the obvious like "ball behind the wicket is runner's call, ball in front of wicket is striker's".

Bat1 = Striker, Bat2 = Runner

Run Out 1 [5th over]= Bat 1 pads the ball and it lands few feet away from keeper, Bat 2 screams NO but was out of his crease by a few feet which confuses Bat 1 and strays away from his crease and was too slow to get back in. There was no run.

Run Out 2 [12th over]= Bat 1 edges it, ball falls short of fine leg, Bat 2 running towards danger end shouts yes yes yes and makes it to keepers end but Bat 1 was busy looking at the ball behind him and did not react till Bat 2 almost made it to his end. Fielder throws the ball at bowling end.

Run Out 3 [25th over] = Bat 1 drives it straight towards the fielder and takes a start as Ball was short of mid on. Bat 1 running towards danger end makes his ground, screaming run run run, Bat 2 was busy looking at the ball behind him and stays still. Bat 1 had to run back and almost ran two runs but falls short by a feet or so.

Its sounds like your team has trust issues, watching the ball rather than trusting your partner to make a good call. Its something you guys need to talk about as a team.

You have a point, very few of us have actually batted with each other before.

Think it's worth just arranging a mid week training session of a couple hours to work on the running.
Maybe working on the basics, will be boring but that's the only way to sort out the problem.
Better to be out caught out than being run out. Just a waste of a wicket. Unless its the last 10 overs where you can afford to risk a few close calls.
No mention of the call "wait". If in doubt shout wait and then take a look.

It will be difficult to get everyone together during mid week. I will try and get a session just before match next week. I was Run Out number 3 and it absolutely frustrated me to get out like that after doing all the hard work of getting my eye in.

Any simple tips on what individuals could do to avoid confusion.

Yeah it's one of the worst ways to go. Rather swap a run out for getting out playing a risky shot.
Yeah even if its 30 mins before the game.

Importance of calling, And calling loudly, if its a close run, best to shout yes loudly.
If in doubt, go with wait.
Even before the game starts, when the opposition is warming up, mark the ones which seem to have a good arm and the slow ones. When the game starts, again look for fielders you can pick on.
In between overs, you could even discuss who to pick on and who to avoid.
Backing up is pretty important , so keep an eye on your non striker if he's doing it or not. And let him know if he's not
