Concussion
« on: June 08, 2013, 02:20:44 PM »

anyone experienced it? how longs the effects? did it change your game?

i'm in a bit of of blurry state from nets last night, a full toss smashed on the full has hit me clean in the back of the head from about 15/20 feet. had a trip to A and E but cant remember it much. was fine for abut 30 mins after the hit, didnt loose conciseness, had a bit of batting but as i took my pads off and got changed suddenly felt very tired and ended up with increasing headache.

now worried this'll give me the fear when i get back in the nets, even thought it was a freak accident.

Concussion CAN be a very serious injury indeed especially in the circumstances you are under. Any head injury should be monitored for 48 hours, any periods of dizziness, sickness, tiredness or other symptoms should be noted and watched with care. Concussion can come minutes, hours or days later. Similar to the secondary drowning theory, you can suddenly collapse or similar. Not that I am trying to scare you, but concussion is very serious, as with all head injuries.

I assume though if A+E gave you the all clear you should be fine, however as I said you should keep an eye on it.

You could also have been suffering from a migraine, these can be set off by head injuries, the symptoms you described sounded like a migraine. The best advice is to sleep it off but make sure someone knows as migraines can turn nasty.

As with anything, you probably will feel the jitters going back into the net, same with car crashes and other injuries, perhaps wear a helmet until you feel more comfortable.

It wasn't a head injury as such but I was hit on one of my eyes once while batting. I had blurry vision for 5 weeks and wore an eye patch. It wasn't easy getting back to batting, I would shake or move back and freeze. At some point you will have to counsel yourself, may be ask a mate who was there to walk you through on exactly how you got hit and use the knowledge to improve your game.

Start wearing helmet as well please.

Don't ignore any symptoms and report it to your docs asap.

cheers guys.

i wasnt even batting at the time, was just walking past the net, batsman was further up as a young WK was behind the stumps for practice. the batsmans creamed this full toss and it just passed the post and clocked me clean in the back of the head. just a freak accident, theres no way i would have had a helmet on normally. I was lucky and the batsman who hit me is actually a medical student so when i started to feel dizzy etc he sorted me out. concussion is nothing to be laughed at, Im not ashamed to admit i was pretty shaken this morning when i had no idea what day it was and was really confused. scary stuff.

think i might put on a helmet for a while when netting just to get the confidence back. dont know if i should leave it a while or just get back on the horse, but will defiantly not be doing anything till 100%.

Moral of the story is to keep an eye on the nets at all times!

Agree with above, the number of near misses I have seen when people are just not keeping an eye on the ball, Getting padded up right in line of a shot etc. is just asking for trouble.

You were just in the wrong place at the at the wrong time looking in wrong direction, keep an eye on your symptoms mate and do go back for a check up with docs. Better safe than sorry here.
