Who really cares about finish of a bat
« on: June 11, 2013, 09:27:06 PM »

Little topic I keep hearing has a great finish so much but after a week of constant use and being carried around does it really matter what the finish is like

Subjective but do people buy bats just because it finished brilliantly

Do you think it a sign of quality I personally don't and don't look at the finish at all

This will be interesting, maybe you can make this in to a poll?

Personally I care about the finish of a bat when first purchasing, but I agree - after a week or two being in your bag or after a decent innings then I personally don't worry about making sure my bat is perfectly kept in my bag etc...

The finish is a legitimate part of the process and as such (should) reflects the whole process.

to some extent finish of the bat does speak of the quality of the manufacturer

I think finishing is quite important.  If a bat is not finished well, I can't help but question the quality of the manufacturing.  I know a lot of our customers feel the same way...

Salix, for one, devote a lot of time and attention to their finishing, and I think it shows.  Then, on the other end of the scale, there's someone like BoomBoom, who by all accounts make pretty decent bats, but as they are not finished very well, are prone to be written off and underestimated by the bat connoisseurs...

Finishing a bat takes the most time and this for me shows the amount of care and attention shown to the bat. This is a big part of choosing a bat for me.

Personally I couldn't give a monkeys about the finish, for me it's about pick up, feel and performance. Simple as that.

After a game or two the finish disappears in any case.

As a general trend a poorly finished bat tends to be drier than a well finished one.

This is also based on my experience of refurbishing a number of bats over the years. A rough finish arguably allows the bat to breathe a little more, meaning a loss of moisture is likely over time.

If a rotten looking/finished bat picks up nicely and goes like the clappers, then ultimately it doesn't matter too much as long as it is well maintained: oiled/waxed and scuff sheet applied.

As most of us here would consider ourselves bat connoisseurs, surely the appearance of a bat is very important? A bat with lovely grains and a silky finish is a thing of beauty, revered by green eyed team mates and opponents alike.

On a new bat the finish is important to me. It shows care and love of the product they've made. On a used bat its not as important but you would still hope its not too shabby.

I can see both sides to this, yes the finish is important, but i can only see that it would be important atheistically. in terms of performance i guess the finish doesnt have anything to do with it? correct me please if im wrong!
(im new to this forum, 1st post. really look forward to being on this forum!)
