icon f2 from ebay
« on: June 22, 2013, 08:40:01 PM »

ok so I saw an f2 icon original ltd edition for sale on eBay at £220
at first I was not really that interested but after thinking about it and after quick search I realised that this was a £365 bat
so to cut along story short I brought it and collected it because I couldn't wait to get it.
happy....? very
2lb 9.5oz no where near knocked in but boy does it ping and its huge
I have changed scuff sheet and grip but I doubt it was used for 2 net sessions
time will tell if I get on with it but first impressions suggest it will be a good investment

all GMs come pre knocked in and factory prepd, so you can take them straight into a match

Nice to see a GM from eBay that doesn't belong in the tat section. Good buy that mate I reckon!

I'm not sure knocking-in is supposed to 'open up' a bat.

the impact of the mallet compresses it vertically but force is also exerted horizontally, this makes gains open up?

F7 has -7mm radius on the bat

I think what people mean when they say a bat opens up is that it feels better when it faces bowling and seems to give a clean feeling connection. All bats perform better when fully prepared, so knocking-in kind of does open up a bat! I don't think he's knocking in though, he's probably taking it to the nets. The only knocking I would give a GM is on the toes and edges and leave the rest to nets and throw-downs. They seem to perform relatively well straight away, but just feel very strange! :-[ Unless you're talking about the grains opening up, in which case you should do that against bowling! Pointless to use a mallet when you could be training with the bat and getting used to it! ;)

knocking in finishes the pressing process creating a hard layer which protects the bat and helps the "trampoline" effect when you hit the ball.

the concept of "opening-up" is where the grains on the bat begin to show minimal cracks and when the bat is at its peak - see
http://www.espncricinfo.com/the-ashes-2013/content/image/647677.html?object=566929;page=1

for an extended example.

The two are different. Personally the phrase "opening up" I think is a horrible expression and is over used on here - especially as most people don't use the bat enough to get to that stage (frequently more than 500 runs!!)

Not quite. The 2mm is the drop from the middle of the face to the edge. Same for the F7 and 7mm drop.
