Tour/Krakatoa Custom Newbery
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:08:21 PM »

Bought myself a Newbery yesterday much to the annoyance of my other half. It was a custom made bat for someone else and the best way I can describe the profile is a cross between the Tour (smooth rounded back) and the Krakatoa (low profile/big edges). She comes in at 2.7 and seems to have plenty of wood behind here.

I instantly took a liking to it because of how it picked up. I've been struggling with a 2.10 recently so I wanted something a little lighter and this just fits the bill. I wasn't planning to get something this light but for the size and how it swung in my hand I was happy. The sound of the mallet is fantastic, the wood isn't the cleanest I've seen for a custom but sound off the bat more than makes up for it.

Apart from now having an empty wallet, I'm very happy with it and looking forward to saturday.

You lucky so and so... looks fantastic for that weight... any chance of an inkling of how much you paid for it and was it direct from Newbery's workshop?

Yes, it was direct from the Newbery shop. They have about 10 one off custom shapes on a stand at the front. These are mostly rejects from their sponsored players -either because they are too heavy or too light.

She cost me £320. I know it's a great deal of money but I just fell in love when I picked it up! I'm looking forward to using it on Saturday.

there will be a few knocking about following the ICC trophy as obviously alot of pros take the opportunity whilst in the UK to get themselves something tasty from tim.

Neil told me they made 4 for Sangakkarra and this was the one he left. That's plenty good enough for me!

They also had a 3lb long blade/long handle made for Gayle, sitting on the stand. The handle was quite grubby so I guess a few people have swung it around!

yeh generally they make up a few and they take their pick from the bunch so there are some left over as excess. Makes sense to cash in on them as no doubt they are of the highest quality if going to a international pro!

I do know a certain person who met up for dinner with several of the Pakistan team and took 3 or 4 bats to be copied! So there are a few International players who take the opportunity to test out the batmaking skills whilst over here. If I were an International player (I could be an International player if the North Pole had better conditions, although I'd still be outplayed by some penguins at my standard!) then I would test the batmaking skills everywhere I went!

That hybrid profile looks super. They should just make that as a stock shape - it would probably sell really well!

My camera skills aren't great here but I wanted to grab a picture of the spine to show...well it doesn't really have one. No concaving whatsoever, the opposite in fact.

I just hope i don't break it!

For it to be that big at 2.7, it likely is a low density cleft. Enjoy!

You might want to apply a bit of oil or bat wax on the exposed areas, so it doesn't lose/gain moisture ...

Looks like a gun!!

How did you post the photos up? I've just tried adding photos of a new bat and nothing happens?

Looks a nice bat. Something different from the norm. Hope it scores you plenty of runs. Not sure i would risk it on the damp pitches tomorrow though.

Did they have any other pro rejects down there that caught your eye?

Yes three others actually. I won't mention names but they said they were all made for test players. Two were on the stand but after I showed an interest they got another three from out back. One was 3lb Lh/Lb so no use to a 5.11 weakling like me and the other had sloped shoulders and looked like a paddle, great bat but not my cup of tea. I was in there for a good hour, on my own, two days running, waving around the three remaining before I decided on the above. The ones I left were 2.9 and 2.10 (but you could only tell because it was written on the top) but I could have gone either way. They all picked up like a dream had an almost tinny ping off the mallet, just perfect. I went with my one as the rounded back intrigued me and I do like a Asian profile.

Were the 2.9 & 2.10 bats the same profile as yours?

Think we can all assume who the 3lb LH/LB bat is for.
