Off Spin bowling Drift Problem
« on: June 26, 2013, 08:29:49 PM »

Hi guys,

I am an off spin bowler. I have been practicing hard on achieving flight and now I have successfully achieved it. But, I could not make the ball drift. I am also trying to pitch the ball on seam, but most of the time it is pitching on the face. Here are a couple of videos which I have taken today. Could someone give me tips on achieving it. Also please correct me if my action is looking wrong for obtaining drift.

To get drift you need to have a lot of revolutions on the ball. It means you need to put a lot of work on the ball. IMO your action does not look like it has a enough arm speed to give the ball enough revs. Would also need to see your grip on the ball.
If you are not hitting the seam then it is probably a release problem i.e. the ball is being released at the wrong angle.

I agree with this, it looks as if you're lobbing it up and not putting any revs on it. Arm speed will help, also going over on you're left leg and rotating on it. Really look to come through on your action and finish with your back to the umpire.

HI mr_wicket, thanks for ur suggestions. When i try to increase my arm speed, i am losing the flight and kind of bowling like a medium pacer. Also the ball comes flat. Any drills on improving it mate?

Could possbily work if seam is pointing towards leg slip or backwards square leg. More side spin will get more drift. If the seam is straighter then you will get more overspin and more dip / less drift.

Have a look at all out cricket Mark Lawson spin coaching videos on youtube. There are quite a few tips on there. Drift happens when you put enough revolutions on the ball like others said. If you can get the ball to release at 45 angle you would get optimal turn, worth trying it in front of a mirror.

Like Blazer says, it's all about the revs.  The more spin there is on the ball, the more dip or drift, bounce and turn - depending on how you spin it.

Even if you bowl it like a medium pacer, and it comes out of your hand like that, revolutions on the ball will flight it.  I think I heard it scientifically described as the Doppler effect?

Thats a typical off spinners grip which is fine. I was taught to grip the ball (same as yours) but the finger nearest your thumb is bent at the first knuckle so the top half of the finger is against the seam. Gives you more surface area to work with.

The hardest part i have found is to get the fast arm action and not bowl too fast. It takes practice obviously. And what one of the other members said, rotate through your hips faster that is drag your back hip around faster.
Good luck mate.

Thanks Blazer, Potzy and stevat. Thats nice to know. I had tried to work on the revs mostly using my wrist but not much through the body's/hip's turn. Will check out using the hip to turn the ball with more revs today and will post how it was.
