Time slows down
« on: July 02, 2013, 11:42:32 PM »

I have never really discussed this with anyone else so I would be very interested to hear from anyone who might experience the same.

When ever I'm in the act of catching, (this seems more pronounced when in the slips) time seems to slow down. This might sound really bizarre but it's the only way I can really describe it. It's like as soon as a snick happens the slow motion starts.

I'm sure I sound completely nutty hence why I haven't discussed it before.

Anyone else have anything similar happen?

When you are batting well, you will also notice the same phenomenon.

Completely agree mate. Was thinking this the other day,  how slip catches always seem to be coming slower than they should lol. Must have a lot to do with focus

I can only hope that this will happen one day.

When I'm in the zone batting this definitely happens, as well as catching, to me. I am sure some one clued up with the science could tell us exactly why it happens but I seem to remember reading it's to do with the brain focusing on one thing at a very high intensity and processing far more information coming through the senses than normal which then seems to slow down time for the perceiver.

The only thing getting slower on a cricket field is me unfortunately!

I have been ok in the slips with the faster bowlers this season but shelled one off a spinner this season. It took ages to arrive and really snatched at it. It was such a dolly....

Very similar to what happens when you are in a car crash...

Time also slows down in a 'contact'. That's for sure.

This strange phenomena happens to me in the field and after I have been batting for 20 or so overs.

I think it is what they call "the zone".

The brain is an incredible thing.

I was thinking why the ball gets bigger the closer it gets.  Then it hit me...  :D

I was thinking this the other day when fielding at gully, and the ball went looping over me just out of reach. Overall it felt like I watched the ball come toward me, then saw it looping higher, put in a jump, saw it go over my hand, then had to run after it. All I could think when I was back in position was, 'Hey, that felt really slow...'. The brain really is quite impressive!

if anyone doubts that this is a genuine phenomenon, try driving at 40mph, then at 90mph, then back at 40....
