I'm in my first season with my club, as 2nd XI keeper. I also bat down the order (which irritates me greatly), but it has given me the opportunity to work hard on my glovework, and I feel that as a result I'm a far better keeper now than I was in my first couple of games. I spent all winter working on my batting, so am not too concerned about a lack of runs this year, mostly because I did not bat 4 weeks in a row, although I managed to get in for a handy 18 this weekend, batting at no 9. If you're a batsman, and you're only keeping to help out, I'd be inclined to try to get away from behind the stumps asap, as particularly if you're not keen on developing as a keeper, your batting will inevitably suffer while you're juggling both jobs.
