Consistency whilst bowling leg spin
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:53:03 PM »

Hi all,
I have been a leg spinner for some 5 years now, but have always struggled a bit with consistency. I have no problem spinning the ball a long way because I have subluxations, and I also play ultimate so have a strong and loose wrist, and when I get it in the right place I can cause the best players in my league problems. Anyone got any tips to work on this?

practice , practice , practice , try putting different objects down eg a cone and hit them , leg spin is very hard to get consistency with without serving up a bad ball or two an over

The thing is though, whilst in the nets, which I am a lot, I get it on the spot, but in matches I always start all over the place!

No, if we had a cage it would just get damaged, history of sightscreens being shoved down hills etc at my club ground, we had our nets relaid last year and since then they have been better for spin. I think possibly I may be over-correcting in my action because before I have rhythm, I sometimes fall away to the left, but whatever I do to work on it just disappears the next time I am in a match situation

rhythm is key , once you get a good rhythm balling in the correct areas comes naturally

If you watch the leading wicket takers in league cricket or in your club , they don't do amazing things with the ball but are fairly consistent with line and length. Try and focus on line and length at the start of your spell. Put a defensive field to start with , I am guessing you bowl quite short trying to spin too much. Once you are settled and confident bring the fielders in accordingly. Being a spinner you are most likely to get hit , so keep that in mind and develop a mindset to let the batsman only hit straight over your head if he is attacking. You are more likely to pitch it up with such thought. You could also set scenarios while in the nets to add a match element .

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there Blazer! I am tall, about 6 foot 3", and at the weekend I was expensive because I dropped a few short which sat up to be hit, but didn't get the chance to settle into a spell at all. I also find that if I am in good form with the bat that I am less likely to perform with the ball, and although I am near the top of the clubs bowling averages, I haven't taken a lot of wickets

As others have said, practice is the key. It is incredible difficult to master which is why there are so few top quality leg spinners in world cricket. Stick at it :)

Would like to say thanks :) Made my return to first team cricket today, figures of 15-3-69-5! Two caught, two stumped and one bowled leaving a wrongun. I made some changes to my run up and now my action is much more fluent, felt more natural and I dropped short about a quarter as much as I have previously!

I'm a couple of divisions below premier league, but my clubs teams are in the top two divisions of our league, so most of the time I am playing against some of the stronger sides around

It is so good, but my GB u20 team mates have just headed for Cologne for the European Championships, whereas I was a reserve for the squad. If anything, ultimate has helped my cricket by making me a lot fitter, but also more wary of bouncers after breaking a rib diving!
