Handled clefts
«
on:

So I am looking to make a bat but I want to find a cleft that has been pressed and handled with an oval handle.
Does anyone know where I can get this from? Only looking for a grade 2 so nothing expensive.

A few of the forum sponsors offer part made's.
John at Red Ink cricket was brilliant with me.

You could probably ring Matt at H4L up and ask him to shape the oval for you, although I do find his ovals a tad more on the round side in terms of shape... Maybe you could ask Kippax, and I know John at Red Ink shapes a superb oval handle.

If you are having a go at making one for yourself, then you can make a handle that fits your hand. All the ones I've made for myself have a pentagonal handle that I find more comfy than an oval. Most of the guys I've made for at my club have gone for the same option and love it after finding it a bit strange at first.

I would but I don't have the tools to cut everything and make all the dimensions equal. I like oval handles, theyre comfy and the bat doesn't move if I don't get it out the middle so that'll just be fine.

What tools have you got? Minimum you'd need are a spokeshave, smoothing plane and rasps. All can be picked up relatively cheaply at somewhere like screwfix or B&Q. For better quality though, you'd be better off trying ebay for something used, but the prices can rack up on them. I usually use a combination of spokeshave and rasp on the handles

So far going to get a drawknife, and a flat and round 240mm spokeshave. should think a smoothing plane and sander should be enough to make a bat out of then.
