Pick up
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:35:53 PM »

I have a bat with a high middle and it picked up amazingly well. I gradually got accustomed to it. There are days when it feels nice in the hand and another day it feels different. Is pick up important considering you don't feel the same when the bat was first used. Thoughts please ?

My Icon(s) have picked up brilliantly. Fooled the overseas on Sunday when we swapped bats mid innings. His was a 2'9 and he couldn't believe how light my 2'10 Icon was in comparison, he thought it was lighter. I think it's you not the bat, the bat doesn't really change characteristics but if you're hung over it may seem a bit different!

I have days when the bat feels different to pick up... When it feels like it picks up well I know I am in form... Might sound strange but true in my case

I find form and fitness affect how a bat feels for you, when I was regularly doing exercise, I felt I could use a slightly heavier bat and it felt it picked up the same as what I normally used. After pigging out for a few months, of course your fitness and form goes, and I felt that the bat took far too much effort to swing and felt heavier on the pick up etc etc. I think regular fitness and shadow batting everyday is pretty important, even if only for a few minutes, but remember that your muscles aren't always in the same condition they were the day before, ie. could be suffering from fatigue, which can affect the way a bat feels on that particular day.

I agree with this Chad. I think that tiredness and fatigue can hit you at anytime depending on weather and the night before :) This is why sometimes you see people playing lazy shots that result in a dismissal. The sign of a real good batsman is realising when he is not at his best and batting accordingly.
