What do two scoops do to the aero-dynamics of this bat? Is there a scientific reason behind them or they just for show?

Scientific reason is to get weight off the bat from areas where you're not expected to hit the ball to often, so you get as much meat behind the middle (and edges in this case) that you can at a light weight.

What are you talking about. At the speeds you use a bat they don't come into it. They are a way of reducing weight, like the dynadrive.

I am sure aero-dynamics and Physics has a play here, however small. It is not just bat speed but the velocity of wind blowing on a given day as well which may have a say how well the bat is balanced. With more surface on the back you are shifting more air [which means more weight] with every swing. I am sure GN have thought about it and have carved a shape to find an optimum.

In other words...more backward drag with every swing.

You must have a batspeed that would make Lara jealous!

I'm pretty sure gn just keep trying different ways to remove weight and keep a balanced bat.

Scoop
Dynadrive
Xiphos
E41 scoop
Nemesis?

Not sure all, if any would effect aero.

Sorry palmist, but you are just wrong. The kind of velocities required to generate any additional drag from modifications due to scooping are well beyond the means of human strength. Aerodynamics plays almost no part in bat design.

If it did, large edges would absolutely not be the way you'd design a bat due to the creation of eddies and the drag these would impose. Forget about aerodynamics. Scoops are all about weight reduction.

You consider drag only in relation to the part of the shot played towards the ball. There is only the bat face that acts against the air. This is governed by the laws.

I would like to see you play a cut shot or any late shot really without an initial back swing. Take a tennis racquet, and pretend to drive, then put that racquet inside a sleeve and do the same, now leave the racquet in sleeve and stick a conical sharp card board spine at the back and swing back and forth. You don't have to swing too hard to feel a difference, however minute.

Now as you said the bats may just be too heavy for human mind to register any difference but it doesn't mean it is not there.

It's mostly weight distribution that would affect the pick up and back-swing of the bat, aerodynamics are very minute. If you compare the extra surface area created by the scoop, and compare it to the effect of taking weight out that area, (weight distribution) then it really doesn't make very much of a difference at all, unless you have a very strong wind which happens to be blowing downwards into the scoops while in your backlift. Could be wrong, but that's what I think.
