split at toe

hi folks

i purchased a part made earlier in the year(grade 2). i finally got to the knocking in stage but after approximately 20 hits with a mallet i noticed a split appearing at the toe travelling up the face of the blade.
I'm wondering if this is down to me and being my 1st attempt it probably is but I'm wondering if anyone can give some advice or tips so i can avoid this in the future.

It shouldn't split in the knocking in phase unless you are smashing it as hard as you can. How deep is it? Doesn't it go through the bat? I apply toe guards and generally avoid knocking in the toe, some may do differently but a good toe guard should offer a lot of protection. Perhaps a little fibreglass tape also.

not hitting it hard at all which is what worried me. i have considered using some tape around the toe end as a precaution but never used a toe guard as not a big fan. however if it helps then it will be good idea to purchase one!
it doesn't go right through but its big enough to worry me. i will continue knocking in but avoid the toe area.I'm probably over reacting

Has the grain split right through? or is it just the grains on the face that's lifted? Did you oil it before knocking in? Where has the bat been stored whilst you've been shaping it?

it looks as tho it is lifting of the face. but if it continues along the grain then i will end up with a split about 4/5 inches up the face of the blade.
it has been oiled and stored in my house during the shaping process. I'm sure I'm over reacting just a bit disappointed it has happened on my 1st attempt. its kinda putting me off a 2nd attempt.

Probably just one of those things. May not be something you had done during shaping. Could be a pressing crack which wasn't obvious when shaping.

I would have said pressing crack too if I was to guess. I can't see it being a crack from anything else.

these pressing cracks, are they something to be worried about or can i carry on knocking in with the intention of using it?

It depends how big the crack is, obviously it wont be as strong.

i cant mate sorry my camera is out of action at the moment. its not massive at the mo so i will just carry on and worry about it if it gets any bigger.

would it be possible for you to send me a video of how you go about the business of bat shaping? maybe some sort of tutorial explaining why and how you use the different tools etc?
really struggling with the spoke shaves!!!!
