Cricket Bat Weights
« on: August 16, 2013, 05:58:25 PM »

Just wondering what everybody's preferred bat weighs - if you use multiple weights, please indicate your preferred option.

I personally have so far used a 2ln 7oz but am looking to move to 2lb 10.

I think this is an interesting topic because we all think we know what weight works, but in practice what actually works is different.
I like a 2lbs 9-10 bat, but have had my most successful season with a 2 lbs 12 bat.

I like 2lb7 or 2lb8 but I'm assuming that's their naked weight. When I've added grips, scuff sheets, toe guards, stickers and what not they're about 2lb10-2lb12 ish

I went from using a 2lb 11oz to a 2lb 7oz between seasons. Loved both bats but I definitely prefer the lighter weight as I feel far more comfortable playing the short ball!

Was it a big adjustment ? I'm going the other way - from a 2lb 7 to a 2lb 10 as I wanted a heavier bat.

I'm now having 2nd thoughts though, thinking the bat might be too heavy for me.

I've never played with anything but a 2lb 7.

It was considering I went straight into using the lighter bat without practising with it before hand. My timing was affected at first but a couple of weeks or so and it was fine. Nothing wrong with the heavier bat in that I loved it and thought it was the best bat I had ever owned, just unfortunately broke on me.

Try not to weigh my bats, as they tend to be heavier than I like which plays on my mind a bit.
I would prefer 2lb 7/8 as I have about zero muscle, but last seasons bat I used weighed in at 2lb 11 at the end of the season and had my best season using it.

Interesting topic for me as bat weight has been playing on my mind of late. Anyone who's seen my batting knows that I'm in my own when I'm cutting and pulling seam bowling but I've been unable to do that this season. I've been too late on the ball and so have lost confidence...

So first thoughts come to bat weight but surely it's more to it than that?

a) Bat shape- a high middle 2.10 may pick up just as well as a low middle 2.8?
b) your grip on the handle- holding the same bat closer to the blade would make it feel lighter than holding it close to the end of the handle

(although people generally play about with weights, less so with grip on the handle)

Anyway, have always used 2.10 but thinking about trying 2.7

I agree - I never even thought of weighing my bats until I joined the forum.  I always selected them on pickup and feel and just thought they were light. At the start of last season, and just after joining the forum, I weighed them and discovered I've been using 2 lb 12 oz bats.  That has definitely played on my mind as I'm now wondering whether they are too heavy for me.

For me, (When handpicking) I always test pick up, then weight. I can cut the ball using a bat that picks up really nicely and weighs around 2.11, but once you get to around 2 ounces above your ideal weight, you do feel that you get tired a lot sooner than normal, and there will be some compromise in your variety of shots.

My most successful season was with a 2lb13 bat however it also have me tennis elbow. That's why mine are lighter now.

Previous bat has been 2.9. Current bat (extra grip and extratec) is 2.14. I think it all depends on the balance of the bat and the relationship you develop with it.
