Searching for bag utopia
« on: August 18, 2013, 04:19:36 PM »

Afternoon Forumites,

So at the start of this year, I decided it was time to move on from my 10-year old Kookaburra large bag.  Many teammates were sporting bags on wheels with great luggage space and dividers and pockets whilst I had a sling-it-over-your-shoulder one compartment shapeless bag.

I liked the idea of having a stand up bag and didn't want to pay the earth for one and settled on the GN Nitro black/blue stand up bag.  Initially very happy; bat sleeves, lots of space, pockets, etc.  However, I'm on my second one - the first was returned prior to a single game as a zip split and this one is showing signs of wear above the norm.  I've also started keeping for my Saturday team, so after buying kit its a bit of a squeeze and I seem to have a huge compartment again as the separate pockets don't have solid sides and get squashed to nothing with gear in the main bag.

So my question is this; based on the criteria below, what do forumites recommend?  I'm looking to buy for next season, so if there is a suggestion to wait for an upcoming range, I do patience fairly well!  Criteria as follows...

- £80 or less
- large enough for bats x 2, pads, wk pads, gloves x 2, wk gloves, P2 strippers, spikes, clothing (inc. hoody, shorts and training shirt, towel, etc), helmet
- separate bat compartment/sleeve preferred
- hard wearing
- stand up
- small pockets for essentials (keys, watch, sweatbands, tape, grips, etc)
- not black and red (a heck of a lot seem to be!)
- reinforced separate compartments

The GM original LE looks a decent bet (if prices come down) and I like the lay out of some of the Gay Nics ones, but they don't appear to stand upright.  It also frustrates me that websites don't show additional pics of the inside of bags - certain amount of guesswork required!

Thoughts and suggestions gratefully accepted...

Simmys got the big Newbery bag (the blue one) that seems a decent large bag,  also have a look at the salix all kit bag, they're really well made.

Although you probably dont want another GN bag i hear there bags have improved a lot for next years range, not got one myself but the salix bags do get great reviews.

M&h T1 is a contender for you. These are well made and actually stand up. I've got the t2 and its probably the best bag I've had. Miles better than the salix

2 people at my club have bought this bag and both have had to be returned due to broken zips. Do agree that it is a lovely bag though.

Been through a few - sleaze get was ok but eventually fell to bits, ca double decker was dreadful and was badly designed and badly put together, woodworm wheelie Is not a great bag but is still working for the moment. Best I had was just a massive over the shoulder 1 compartment job 25 years ago from hunts county

Cheers for the advice fellas.  Ironically, I've never had an issue with my very hard wearing 10 year old Kook bag; just getting a bit old to be lugging around all my gear on my shoulder!

I've definitely got the Salix and M&H bags on my radar and I'll take a look at the Ayrtek.  I'm not averse to another GN bag - I've seen Jake's thread re; the quality of the new 2014 range.  I'll get along to Talent cricket, Owzat and B3 to take a look and open a few up, then will buy from one of the forum's sponsors.

Thanks again - any more thoughts are always welcome...

I've got the Ayrtek bag and really like it. Very well designed and thought out with compartments (the full length bat covers are a god send)
