How has my bat put on 3 ounces?
« on: August 20, 2013, 07:50:24 PM »

I broke my GM Flare a few weeks ago during a game and popped it into M&H for a re-handle. It weighed 2.9 before but now weighs 2.12 and the balance is all to bits.

Is it possible for a handle to increase the weight and upset the balance by so much? If so, if the weight has increased in the handle wouldn't this make the bat pick up lighter as the heavier handle would have the same effect as counterbalance?

A handle will weigh about 2oz so possibly. Did you actually weigh it when purchased or before it went off to M&H? If not it could have been that weight when bought.

Weighed it about 3 weeks before it broke mate.

I'm not that worried about the additional weight, but the fact the balance is a lot more bottom heavy. I know Flare's haven't got the best pickup for a high middled bat but this one was perfect  :(

Is the handle thicker than before?

Saying that, wouldn't more weight in the handle make the bat pick up better? Acting like a counter balance?

That's what my original point was - I can't figure out how the pickup has gotten worse. Think it may be time for retirement.

Sorry mate, didn't read it fully.

Strange, what about a weight reduction instead?

Could do, but I'm not sure how much could be taken off without it losing it's effectiveness. It's a convex profile obviously but it's not the biggest bat going. Would taking 1-2 ounces off make a big difference to the profile?

It would, you'd ether have to reduce the size of the bat (spine and edge size) or keep the same shape but add some concaving. You may not need a couple of oz off. Just a little weight from the toe up.

I would guess, there may be extra wight from tape, scuff sheets toe guard ect, and a lose of weight from chance of grip, spine etc. it's a strange one, but possible if all the bits fall into place.

Depends on where you hold the bat. In case you hold it near the bottom of the handle, heavier handle would help in pickup but if you hold the bat right at the top, you might feel it heavier.

Assumption is M&H has put a heavier handle.

Can also be extra moisture if it hasn't been stored well while travelling with the post.

In that case probably a heavier handle.

I guess it's much easier to balance a bat to it's handle while you're shaping it than it is to do it the other way round.

Number of grips? Has that changed?

Also I think moisture isn't just an issue in transit.

Must be mate, never expected it to make such a difference. Shows how important the handle is to the balance of a bat.

No mate, still one control grip. Might stick it in the airing cupboard ;)
