are my bats too heavy - wrist problems :(
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:27:07 PM »

Hi guys. Decided to pop this up to see what people thoughts might be.

Now, I've always used a bat weighing around 2.9/2.10 normally a little on the heavier side with grip setup etc
I've never had any issues before this year but more and more after training and if I've batted in a game I find my wrists and hands are aching. Hands Are sore on the palms, like I've been gripping the bat too hard (similar feeling to that after the first winter net sessions) but my wists are the worst. Very painful indeed. I've never really felt that my bats were heavy, as they aren't but after a long net thursday I still hadn't recovered fully for the game today :(

This is starting to do my head in now so has anybody else had this/ heard of this and are there any suggestions to prevent it?? Other than changing my bats... I love them too much to get rid ha ha

Try holding the bat with just your thumb and forefinger + middle finger.

It will naturally take over and grasp the bat more when you need to pull or cut. But for front foot shots I find it not only helps your top hand to play 'properly' but also really helped me when I went through a stage of terrible pain in my forearm and wrist.

I'll give that a go in the nets. Sounds useful. Cheers

You've either been doing something way too much or not enough!

Edit: On a more serious note, to help the hand soreness, try changing grip? I'm currently using scale/snake/halfmoon (whatever you want to call them) which feel very nice, they provide good cushioning without being too abrasive. Also try wearing inners? Fingerless or full fingers to take the palms of the gloves off your palm

Missed it in my original post. The thumb and first two fingers thing only applies to your bottom hand. :)

Cheers guys maybe I'm singling one thing with the weight aspect. Never thought about the grip setup etc as like I mentioned not really had problems before. I think I'll get down to just one grip and ill try that bottom hand technique as well. Last thing I want to be doing is changing bats etc but its a really similar feeling to when I've toyed around with big heavy bats in the nets

It could also be too thin or thick handle... I had the problem using too thin a handle at the bottom so put half a grip on and fixed the problem immediately

It may be completely unrelated but are you using a bat with a flat face? I found that when batting, in particular in the nets, for an hour, with a flat-faced bat, my wrists got sore. I have returned to a traditional rounded face and have found it to be much more forgiving and no wrist soreness since...?
Hope you get it sorted mate!

Could be your blood circulation, mate, rather than just the bat weight.

I think you should bite the bullet and go and see your doctor. You could be suffering from tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome. It's well worth having it checked out.
