2nd attempt
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:00:27 PM »

hi guys. i decided to have another go at shaping a bat. my 1st attempt was terrible so this is number 2.
i got the cleft from H4L so i new it would be good quality

this is a close up of the blade

a glance at the profile

a toes eye view

on this view you can see a few very small dents in the wood.im not too concerned about this as i thought it would come out during the sanding stage. but no amount of sanding seems to be working? i have done it by hand and also with an electric sander. im wondering now that the type off paper is to blame? there is also a number of these on blade.
is there anything i can do to improve the level of finishing. either technique or equipment wise? please note that i have not polished it or started the handle twine as yet.
im really pleased with this one especially after my first debacle.
also i apologise for the size of the images but have no idea how to alter it.
feel free to be as critical as you like. it can only improve the ones i do in the future

cheers

Here you go mate , I don't think a lot of people can see much on those pics  :D :

Looks very good for an early attempt! I like the way the profile kind of jumps up a bit like that kookaburu bat which I've forgotten the name of  :-[  :D. What grade sandpaper are you trying to use to get out the scratches?

Is that an SS Jumbo profile?

im not a fan of all the concaving that appears on alot of these modern bats so i decided on the shape to help with balance. its still a rather low middle so will prob try a higher one next. see if that helps with the weight. as far as sandpaper i start with a rough one (i think its about 180?) then a fine sanding with i think its 120? not really sure if the numbers are correct or what they mean. the one thing i can be certain on is that one says rough the other says fine lol. its only my secon attempt so i know its not going to be perfect. however i did think this would solve the problem. i have noticed a thread on this subject so shall have a read and try other types. see if this improves things.
overall im really happy with the look and profile. need to learn now where and how to distribute the weight  to improve pickup.

not sure i certainly didn't try to copy it.  the amount of different bat companies and the history of bats. im sure its not an entirely unique shape but i didnt have any other bat in mind when i started. i do love the profile of the hammer 156 along with the l&w ultra so i might give them a whirl next up.

When sending, start with the low numbers, which are coarser and move to the higher numbers which are finer.

That's the SS jumbo , looks fairly similar in the way the spine goes except your spine carries on and doesn't go flat around the little dip  :).
