Can someone explain Pickup index ?
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:46:34 AM »

Is there such machine which measures the pickup index? I have heard GM has a chart somewhere but I couldn't find any official information about this.

How does it work? is pickup index 1 supposed to be lighter than 4 in two bats with the same dead weight?

Would be great to know the pickup indexes of the bats you have as well

GM don't weigh bats at all.

The pickup index is decided by the bat maker.

A 1 pickup is the lightest, a 5 pickup is the heaviest.

A heavy dead weight bat can have a light pickup, as it is all done on feel. To me it is a beautiful system. I have a Flare Original LE that is 2'11.5 with a pickup index of 1.

Ah never knew that.

The description on the label makes little sense though, as it says 1 is control and 5 is power. Surely your 2.11 flare would have more 'power' than a 2.8 one that has a (No Swearing Please) pickup.

Are all GM Argon's have same pickup index? or does it change? How do I know the pickup index of a bat I'm buying?( online or from a shop)

I bought a GM argon but I didnt see any label indicating the pickup index.

The pickup index only applies to 5 star bats. Which are 909 (or maybe 808) and above.

The index isn't generally advertised on most websites. We always tell any customer who asks what we have, we also order bats in to their specific pickup index if they want one.

All bats are available in all pickups i believe.

Thanks , mine was 5 star as well, but there weren't any mention about the pickup index , could be just a one off.

The tags do sometimes come off, i tend to write the index in pen on the twine under the grip as well though.

The 808s up usually have a label around their handle stating the pick-up index. Retailers often remove this.

Read control as allows the touch player to play all his shots and power as great for the front foot lunger. Think of it as telling you how far it is between an Amplus and an MMi3 in terms of ease of wielding. A pick up index of 5 doesn't mean the pick up is bad, just not as light a pick up as a one.

so it's essentially just the height of the middle then, but sure that wouldn't vary from Flare to Flare if there all CNC'd, there that be that much natural variation in the wood, can there?

No it's not, the allegory I gave was to demonstrate the difference in pick up. It is nothing to do with the height of the middle. A pick-up of one is generally going to feel balanced more like a higher middled bat while a five will feel more like a lower middled bat. Doesn't mean that the middle is higher or lower.

Not sure why anyone would want a high middled bat that picks up badly, but there you go.

One persons bad is another persons perfect.

We also have an absolute lump of a Flare at 3'2 with an index of 5, definitely doesn't suit me, but there are some big units out there who throw their hands at the ball who will love it.
