My Puma Bat broke! Repair?
« on: September 06, 2013, 12:54:04 PM »

Folks,

So My beloved Calibre 5000 which I bought last year split on Sunday. I lent it to my Bro in Law who actually scored a 100 but broke it halfway through his innings!

Here is the damage:

Anyone out there able to let me know whether the bat can be repaired, and some life can be restored to this beautiful blade? I would be more than happy to get it repaired with the risk of it re-breaking again as it really is my favourite bat..

That looks very repairable.

If you're not far, take it to rob pack. He did a great job on a kookaburra of mine.

Thanks for the hope guys..

I don;t have the bit of willow that fell off, as it was in pieces and I got rid of it.. I would be honoured to have Mr.Pack repair the bat himself, but I am based in Essex and don't think I am local, where is he based?

I have asked Jake at Vitas to see if he can repair this..

he did a cracking job on my Mids bat a few weeks back, and it came back practically new.. Would love to see this in the same form!

i had one break similar (not quite as bad) but had the missing single piece. Bit of dowelling and was ok.

Think your struggling without the piece of wood though mate...

Would be hard without the piece , but it could be tried doing something that I think Ryan did recently with the shoulder of a bat (But I think that was just a small crack and not a chunk!) and attempt to cut another piece of willow to size? Maybe just try and sand the sides of where the missing chunk are to make the shape more regular so it can fit in? One of the only things I can think of right now  :-[. I could see it being very hard to cut to the correct shape though.

Where did you buy the bat from? Maybe they could help you out?

Even without the piece of wood its still repairable. I think Ryan did a repair just a short while ago where he used a different piece to fix similar damage.

The only problem is I think ryan actually cut out the chunk in the first place due to a crack of some sort and it didn't actually fall out meaning he could make it a regular shape. If I remember correctly he then just stuck a square block of willow into it , let it try and then trimmed it down to the right shape. Could be worth a go but would be difficult giving the shape and stuff.

I know what you mean and I meant that your would have to make the surface even on this bat too, since the pieces are missing you would need to find a piece of willow from else where and cut both to fit

It's a hard fix, not many people will take it on, I would guess. Because the face is missing.

I fixed one like this a few week ago, I think it's going well, but it was not quite as bad as this to be honest, might have a picture,

If your in Essex take it to Warsop. Tony may be able to fix that for you.

Cheers for all the responses and advice guys!

You are right, the job isn't as simple as it looked or I thought it would be. I am in touch with a few people to see if it can be repaired, I am also in direct contact with CricketDirect (the retailers I bought this off) - They will send it through to Puma repairs and let me know the damage cost.

I would rather ask a pro bat maker to do this job ideally someone on the forum, I will let you know the progress on this.. In the meanwhile PDC have some great sales on Puma Bats so tempted to just buy another one. The Same Calibre 5000 is on for £127 only!
