Who actually likes concaving??
« on: September 18, 2013, 06:20:11 PM »

It really has struck me of late.  Does anyone actually like concaving on a bat?

Maybe that, as a specialist shop, we only really attract the discerning cricketer - or that I just spend too much time on here - but I can't help but thinking that concaved bats might soon be a thing of the past because nobody seems to actually like them!

Yet, if this really is the case, why are the majority of bats that are made today still concaved?? Is it really all just a big edge thing??  ???

They shouldnt but

Big edges sell bats! And concaving is the only way to get big edges on a light bat. And remain with somekind of spine.

Thankfully I don't have this issue, using 3lb bats, little concaving is needed to create what I need.

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant stand it. i cant see any positives to it other than cosmetic. maybe it helps with the balance enabling ppl to have bigger edges? but that alone has no benefits(in my opinion anyway).
whats wrong with a good old fashioned bat. what i have noticed is tha ppl tend to talk about bats they used to have rather than bats they own now.

I have a fairly concaved Laver. I really like it. All this talk of a thin middle is poppycock - the responsiveness across the middle of this bat is great. Shots stay hit with it!

I have an MH distinction and every shot came out of the middle

As mentioned 'to concave or not to concave' might have something to do with the crave for bigger edges. You pays your money.... methinks.

This craving for bigger edges and flatter faces, does it make the bat more likely to crack when edged? Surely a rounded edge deflects more. Sorry don't want to go off on a tangent.

I have a concaved RNS Larson Unik G1, 2lb9 with 42mm edges. Yes is it has an extremely light pickup and gives me more confidence to go over the top... But would I trade it for a Newbery Mjolnir... You bet your backside I would... and with interest!

I really don't like the look of concaving on bats when looking down the spine and in theory also don't like it but most of the time unless super concaved you can't see it. So I am not that fussed.

I think bats could have edges of  25 mm tops , decent weight distribution. I think the serious cricketer buys on feel and sound. Very rare are they bought on 50mm edges . I hope they disappear. Bring the skill of finding the middle of the bat back into the game

I'm not a fan of too much concaving. I had a Bradbury which had a huge spine and it was very unforgiving if you hit it off centre. However I did score what I feel was my best ever knock with it, 90 off about 50 balls and the ball just flew off the bat almost every time. I think that I needed to be in good touch to get the most out of it while other shapes can be more forgiving.

A bit of concaving is actually good as it helps pick up, aggressive concaving kills the bat.

Go and read the comment relating to edge size and flat faces in the GM launch thread from Ed Lowy.

Pressing is more important in my opinion.

If concaving had a dramatic effect on the way a bat performed, then the scoop would be the worst bat ever made.

Bats with concaving will never become extinct. People want light and big edge bats and with supply of willow becoming more and more tight, the percentage of the top most grade clefts (light, clean grains, performance etc.) will become less and less.

Either people compromise - use heavier bats or accept big bats with huge edges but with flaws in the face (wider grains, some blemishes etc).

Personally, not too bothered whether the bat has concaving or not. It the balance and pick-up is good and I can time/middle the ball most times, the bat is good for me.

Except for a few most professional players don't even bother about these things.

Cosmetically I think concaving looks good, but for me all that matters is if the bat feels good in my hands. I don't care if the bat has 5 or 15 grains, clean or blemishes in the face, as long as it has a good middle and feels right in my hands.
