own your own willow
« on: October 17, 2013, 09:34:09 PM »

just came across the fact that the public can invest in their own willow tree and get bats from it in the future sounds quite like an awesome idea just going to take a while

There's a topic on this in the forum somewhere. Details about how many clefts you get, etc. I'd advise use of the search function.

I would imagine they have an insurance policy to protect themselves against this.

I have bought/invested in some of this "own your own willow" for by boy, who will be 16 when the trees are ready. It will be a better ROI than putting money in a bank. The maximum you can buy is 3 trees per year.

300 quid a year, not a bad return for them or the investor really. I wonder how they promise 'top of the range' bats though? Surely that's going to be luck?

Having read horror stories about single bat purchases going wrong at kippax. A long term investment such as this would seriously worry me.

I'd personally not do it, but if someone is thinking long term it's a small enough outlay to mean you don't lose much

Guys at our club just put in £10 each so we each get 1 bat in 15 years time.

Even if it doesn't happen its a story to tell at least and the certificate you get looks well in our pavillion!

With the £100 invested, I would imagine they could plant say 5 saplings minimum, giving them approx 200+ clefts in 15 years time. You get to go and watch the bats being made so I would hope you would have a choice of clefts.

Yeah to be fair I very much doubt you get a dedicated tree that is solely yours. I would presume you are just allocated 1 tree in their 'forrest' and when the 15 years is up you get to pick a cleft.

I would also add that they do however give you the ownership of a tree if the company ever went under and they say they get around 30 clefts from each tree.

Went 50/50 on a tree back in July when my best friend and I celebrated our 50th birthdays. Only another 14 years and 10 months to go.

Mind you what I will be doing with 5 top of the range bats when I'm 65 is another thing. Although I'm sure that my son who will be 36 won't object to pinching a couple out of my bag and there will always be a son in law, grand kids etc.

The certificate is a good talking point too.  :)

I'm seriously tempted to be honest. It will be a nice surprise in 15 years when I have long forgotten that I bought it!

This is the thread from 2008: http://custombats.co.uk/cbforum/index.php?topic=1021.msg11090#msg11090

You get 10 clefts from a tree, supposedly grade 1.

I like this idea. I'm now thinking if it'd be worth a club investment.. Club could then use the bats it gets as prizes or sell them ..  Hhuuummm
