Basically a tuftoe is a toughened fabric wrap to protect the toe and lower edge, and a lamitoe is a hardwood fitting into the toe. The addition of a lamitoe turns the bat into a Grade B bat. This means that it would not be allowed to be used in First Class cricket.

I think it's just cotton tape. The tuftoe is usually applied when there's a crack going through the toe. What happens is the cracks are glued and let to set. The cotton tape is then tightly wrapped around the toe and brushed with glue so is sets solid, almost like a cast. This should help to prevent the crack from opening back up.

Another alternative would be to wrap the toe with twine (the same stuff that should be around your bat handle), in a similar process the cracks in the toe are glued and left to set. Instead of applying fabric tape you can apply twine in the same manor, wrapping it tightly and brushing it with glue so it sets solid.

I hope these help, any questions fire away.

Here's some photos of the twine process ( I hope you don't mind me pinching these Ryan!)
