Latest bat from the workshop
« on: November 06, 2013, 07:52:41 PM »

Hey guys and gals,

Little sneaky peak here of the latest bat I have been working on. Had a few hours spare today so ground this one out. Very nice piece of willow to work on, very few imperfections so was effortless to work on.

The bat at present weighs just over 2lb6oz so after the final sanding and dressing up should be about 2lb8oz finished. I will upload better pictures once I have given it a final sanding and dressed it up. Waiting on some sticker designs to arrive too so should be done within a week or 2.

I decided to go for a more modern style profile, concaved but not too much, 33mm edges, 50mm spine, slightly offset, 9 good looking grains. Rounded the face ever so slightly, has a low middle, semi oval handle with a flat bottom.

Pics are low quality as I took them with my iphone but will take some HQ pics with the camera once it is completed.

Looks like a lovely profile. Reminds me of my old Screaming Cat SERIES 3.

Little update, bat is now finished and bound. Just need to order sticker sets and grip it then it is finito.

Some better pics here for you guys. This one should be a belter! Weighs in at 2lb8oz with 1 chevron.

Nah not cotton in this one. Wanted to see what the difference is using other materials so am experimenting with nylon thread on this one, it's alot lighter and thinner than the cotton I used on the last one and feels pretty comfortable in the hands. Because of the way I have shaped the handle it conforms to it better than the cotton as it is slightly less rounded.

For this handle I have shaped it round at the top, oval at the bottom with a flat underside and the nylon seems to give a better shape than cotton which seemed to round it all off a bit.

If it doesn't play as good I will rebind it in cotton but I think nylon gives an overall better feel based on the shape I made.

This looks absolutely fantastic, if you don't mind me asking; where did you get the cleft from?

Has this been made for someone?

I got the cleft from John at Red Ink. I haven't made it for anyone, just simply made it. Debating whether to use it or sell it at present as it is a lovely bat.

Would need to get it stickered up and gripped then make a decision. Would need a good offer to let it go!

just had a thought about the nylon thread, PVA glue may not stick it down properly. Thinking it might come loose quicker that the cotton would.

Depends how tightly you bind it really. It's on there pretty tight and closely bound together with a decent layer of glue. Should be fine but if it doesn't work out I can easily sand away the glue residue and rebind it in cotton.
