Heartwood...which edge?
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:00:59 AM »

This isn't a topic about should a bat have heartwood or not. I'm wondering when you buy a bat with heartwood, which edge should it be on? I have read conflicting opinions on this in the past few days. I would also like to know the reason why heartwood should be on one edge and not the other, or even if it makes no difference what so ever.

A lot of people say get heartwood on which ever edge you hit the ball more with, whether it be the outside or inside. For me im not really bothered about heartwood at all, I have it on my Salix but I have all sap would on my python and haven't really seen a change in play ability because one has red wood and the other doesn't! However I do think heartwood looks nice so if its there id take it over an all sap wood bat personally

its harder than the normal wood so when it hits it flies off the edge, the reason why some people prefer it on the outside edge.

Inside edge for me.

Mainly as my bats tend to disentegrate there, so I'd rather have the harder bit there.

Wherever it comes really. If the pick up and feel are good who cares where the heartwood is??

But if there were two identical bats on pickup and feel I'd probably go for it on the outside edge bit I'm not overly fussed to be honest.

I tend to use the edges more than middle anyway, so don't really mind!

I thought heartwood was more brittle so you want it on the opposite side you hit the ball the most if you want longevity out of a bat.

So funny - I was just talking to a mate about this today - and our opinions differed.

No science behind it but I prefer it to be on the outside edge.

I have a couple of bats with heartwood (and a couple without) and do not notice any discernible difference between them.

Could be the way I hit the ball though :-)

I'd like a fully heartwood bat, just to try it out. I wonder whether heartwood is denser than sapwood?

Id say it is because you never see a lightweight big bat with heartwood and any half heartwood bats Ive had have been heavy for their size

I said outside edge, but only because I reckon that looks better. I wouldn't have a clue performance/durability wise.

My bats more than half heartwood and a monster for the weight.
