Net footage 12th November 2013
« on: November 13, 2013, 09:13:12 PM »

Hi all,

took a little trip to the nets at Globe Sports in Bristol last night and took my camera for good measure. Here are three of the buckets I faced, I would appreciate any feedback/constructive criticism.

Thanks a lot :-)

Front foot a bit half cock ie. no real intent to get right forward. You end up pushing at the ball with your bat and wide open to a nip backer. Just a bit more of a stride is needed.

Agree with Saunders.

Without the stride in you are also not balanced at impact, this is highlighted when after your shot your back foot has to move to stop you falling over. A bigger base means a stable base. You are what people refer to as caught on the crease, not forward not back. If I was to guess I'd say you get out either LBW or caught behind. Also with a nice stride in you can transfer your weight through the ball which will help with timing. A simple drill would be to get a mate to drop a tennis ball out infront of you, enough that you need to step to it, let it bounce twice then step and play your shot. To check if you are balanced hold the shot for 3-5 seconds. If you are as steady as a rock you've got it, however I'd suspect you'll wobble and have to move your feet again. This is a great way of feeling and understanding how balanced you really are. Then just progress the feeds onto underarm bobble feed, over arm, bowling machine, full bowling. Good luck.

Thanks mate, I presume it would also explain why my head falls to the off side a lot? I don't feel that balanced it has to be said.

as youve said mate you dont look that balanced at contact and you seem like you are fallining over to your right when batting. i think with a bigger or more positive stride youll be able to get the base you need. Look like a decent batter though mate

This is such a good way to analyse yourself.

Wish I had something like this in South London. What bowling machine were you using?

It's a Bola Krs. I normally go with a friend or two but was on my own and had to use the autofeeder.

Right for what see starting from feet up  i think you can get the front foot to the pitch of the ball then try and get bit weight over the front knee  right next try and get your bat tucked in bit more from what i see the bat takes diffent paths and i also think you bottom hand takes over grip tight as with top hand and lot less with bottom hand  and then your head need to go more towards the bowler if you see what mean good one to watch for this was owish sharh  hope this helps

Someone gave me a good tip at nets yesterday, stick your bum out a bit more and put your chin up a bit more. I found that it was hugely helpful balance wise.

Stance is ok, just need to lean with your head and front shoulder. That will make you get a bigger stride in, and you will also have far more time to play the ball! Would perhaps suggest that with an open stance, move your back foot towards off stump a little bit (so that your little toe joint is over the line of middle stump). The biggest problem with an open stance is losing your off stump, and this will help a lot!

Had a one on one coaching session with ex-Somerset player Ian Blackwell tonight and we widened my stance and sorted a couple of things in trying to be more stable = it made a HUGE difference. Have another booked in next week and already looking forward to it. Highly recommend Ian, keeps it simple, and being a successful ex-pro he's been there, done it and found out what works.

On a side note, used my M&H original high for the first time with a hard ball and I cannot believe how good this thing felt and sounded :-)
