Becoming an Umpire

Afternoon chaps

Just a quick one, have any members undertaken any Umpiring courses and qualifications? I'm very interested in starting a course when I return from Oz in the new year, would be something I'd love to do in the long term, up to the highest standard of Cricket I possibly can, professional cricket being the major target but I understand that would be a long time off and possibly rather optimistic. But we can all Dream and have something to aim for

Has anyone else felt like this or given this a shot?
Would be interesting to hear your thoughts and experiences if you have given it a go or are currently training for it

Got to umpiring in the premier league fairly comfortably, without sounding big headed I think I was one of the "better" umps. As a player I prefer umps that have a bit banter so that's what I tried to do, have a laugh and explain your decisions and I think that's half the battle.

My old man does Home Counties Prem and Feeders. He went on holiday to Aus and got £70-80 a game. They even asked him to do a final of competition but he had other plans. He could of almost lived on his proceeds from umpiring with a couple more games a week. Good move in my book  ;)

from what i seen and know its just rock up and they get you throw go for it mate i think good umps will have played to a good ish level and biggist battle is getting players on side its hard to please every one thow must admit iam tempted to give it ago as you cant play for ever

That's some decent cash! What level of cricket was he umpiring?

My housemate at uni works for the ECB with umpires, I'll enquire for you if you like. You'll have to remind me later on in the week though as I'm half way through moving house and a bit busy at the minute!

I did my level one course at the start of this year.  It's fun, interesting and I learnt alot.  I think it also improved my umpiring and I'm probably going to do the next level course this coming Jan.

My course started 7th Jan and appears to be run annually (don't know if that crosses over with your Aus trip).  A few started a couple of weeks in so it's no biggie.  Different orgs may or may not like it though.

My course was run at Trent Bridge so was easy to get to and find online.  I suggest you google for your local umpires association and see what info they can give you ahead of time.

Bumping this ;-) I did my level one umpiring course during the off season and really enjoyed it.

As a 2nd XI opening bat I do end up umpiring once I'm out most games. Although it does give me an incentive to bat longer, I actually really enjoy the role and would like to do it more in future.

I did my level one last year, very interesting and gives you a lot of confidence when umpiring for your club. It's also a couple of hours a week just chatting cricket so it's great!

Forgot all about this, did my level 1 in the winter as well, but havent done any umpiring as of yet as been far too busy.

The course was very interesting though, learnt the odd thing or two

The recent bump of the topic caused me to read this. Are you sure that was sterling and not AUD?

According to the Adam Hills exchange rate that would sound more like it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtW-RtMJkwY about 8 mins in). 70 quid a game sounds like a result, may have to take more interest in the umpiring rather than scoring.
