That time of the season. Again !!!
« on: December 10, 2013, 04:26:50 AM »

Time of the season were Christmas pay checks and tax rebate have been nice to me and I have decided to get all new gear which is gonna be great fun because last time I had to buy gear was over 2 years ago due to sponsorship. This time around there seems to be nearly 3 times the equipment in the market I have done plenty of browsing and have decided on certain things to purchase but the one big problem I have is a bat. I use to use very light bats but my bat broke from my sponsor 4 weeks from the end of the season and because sponsorship was coming to an end couldn't be bothered sending it off for a repair. So borrowed a team mates 2.12 gm flare original l.e (was an absolute rocket evening a little push the ball flew off) and was wondering if there was any bats in the market would be close to this '? I have no cost limits so someone reach out to me.
I have been looking at the following bats but don't know so much option :

Affinity models
Gm 6six, octane l.e
Gn maverick, e41 customs
B3 bespoke
All Salix models
Newbury Kudos
Kookaburra Kahuna Top
Millichamp and Hall ck22

I'm not particularly a fan of concaving as I have found rebound quality is a lot better on non-concaved bats. But like a lot of wood is the bat and like it slightly bottom heavy as I like to drive the ball. And reckon a bat weighing around the 2.10lb mark is about right.

I'd get the M&H .... First. Not that many about (if that's the one they were on about).

Then a B3, Affinity and a Kahuna.

Then the others.

I'd opt for the Affinity, the Carbine has no concaving but a mid middle, the spectre has a lower middle. I have the Ayrtek model and it's an absolute rocket. It weighs in around 2 12 but it has an exceptional pick up. I sure if you spoke to Marcus at Affinity he could sort you out with a hybrid of the models to better suit your needs.

Cheers for the replies guys I just don't know what to do hue last time I bought a bat it was when everyone was going crazy over warsop, mb sher Amin and ca bats it's incredible how it's changed and I'd probably buy a cheaper bat for midweek games there is just too much option I'm from Yorkshire anyone know of any companies near bye ? I hate romida I honk it's useless and PC sports and monk house just don't have enough selection in my eyes any suggestions.

Owzat is the only other option or All Rounder if you are wanting to go to a shop.

Charlie French are also very nice bats but B3 are really taking off if you choose to go custom.

Where about in Yorkshire are you from? Sheffield here.

I think my choice would be the M&H CK22

We're abouts is owzat ? And I'm based in Harrogate. And I don't want to pick a bat online and when I pick it up it feel wrong I'm quite picky when it comes to bat a bit OCD about it lol.

I would say that if you liked the Flare, then go for a bat without concaving, or with minimal concaving. If money is no issue, I would get an Amplus, as there is not nearly as much concaving on that compared to the CK22. (Amplus is great in terms of coverage) Maybe even a custom made bat from a bat maker here would be a good option, you could arrange to go to their workshop, that way, you can feel the pick up just to make sure it is spot on! Salix, H4L, RPC and Aldred are all good shouts. :) If you live near any of these batmakers, you may as well call them up, I know I would love to watch my bat being made!

Try not to go too much above your preferred weight though, some of us get excited when we get a bat which picks up exceptionally at a heavy weight, but they almost always end up on eBay or the sale section… I think an ounce to an ounce and a half above the ideal weight is the max I would go! I think Gary at Choice Willow always recommends to go as light as you can, as this helps you to adjust and time the ball better!

I had a 2.7lb bat for the last 2 seasons and it's just too light but when I used a heavier blade I found that I waited for the ball a lot more it's probably more of a mental thing to be honest. I just didn't understand why I seemed to time everything with a middle like the flare as I'm mainly a front foot player and being from Yorkshire you want a low middle so when I used it I was shocked to see how many more balls I timed with this other bat and how many more runs I scored.

There is a lad from our club that plays for England u19s and currently playing in the tri series against UAE and Pakistan. He is sponsored by gm and suppose I could ask him but it just feels cheeky and I won't get to feel the bat before purchase

According to Crictech, we often hit the ball higher than we would expect! For me, there are two distinct spots I hit on the bat, one sort of just above mid, and another low. (My bats have delaminated in both these places) If you feel the Flare profile just works for you, why not get a batmaker to replicate that shape? Maybe try go for a 2.9-2.10 bat? I think I jumped from a 2.8 to a 2.13, and I felt I timed the ball better, but that's probably because there was a lot more wood in the 2.13! I've now dropped down to anything between 2.10 to 2.12, and feel I have found what suits me. :) It was probably the larger coverage due to the increased wood mass and fuller profile which made you much more comfortable with the Flare!
