OMG new bat
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:12:29 PM »

So the nice chaps at Kippax re-handled my Laver, and whilst there I was tempted with this monster, its huge and just 2lb 10oz with a very light pick up.

Will do a review when its used but here are the pics

It feels fine, but I use spiral grips on most of my bats, this one has come with a Gray Nics style scale grip.

I have nets tomorrow and will know a lot more once I have used it, I could not believe how light the pick up is.

They had about 15 on display on the counter, all tapped up amazing, this just felt the lightest. Yes it taps up like a dream, but it has to as it is so big, the spine is about 55-58mm and the edges are 46mm, it's just a huge chunk of wood, something I didn't need and it is all the fault of this forum.
I didn't like the colossus sticker, or the one on the toe, but they removed them prior to knocking it in for me.

Used it for a few balls in the nets tonight and the ball just flies off the bat, very very happy with it

am i the only one who thinks thats not huge, it just looks it. obviously chris has the pick of the willow in his stores so can pick out any light cleft he likes. yes its pretty big for the weight but its deceptive because of the way the edges taper towards the toe and shoulder and the fact that its pretty much all edge. would you still be thinking its that big if it only had 35-40mm edges? 55 mm spine isnt massive at all. its designed to give the impression of size as thats whats in demand atm.  personally id much prefer to see a bat with 35mm edges and 60-65mm plus spine. each to their own though.

chris certainly does churn out some nice bats, good that its a goer too!

It is big, even the toe is fairly thick, but does have more concaving than your Ltd edition bat I have, both ping and because they are thick where it counts the middles are massive, yours is truly good, so good and bespoke that I have lent it to one of my staff to try in the nets in the hope that he buys one from you :)

Surely if you shaved off about 10mm off the edges at those areas and packed it in the middle, it would respond better! ;) I'm with John on this, in that 35mm edges are enough. You want a decent spine along with full profile, with a small amount of concaving, if any!

Does more wood = better performance?

If so, would it not be more beneficial to have an even amount of wood across the back of the bat? Giving the whole blade uniformity in performance?

But you're meant to generally try middle the ball, so more wood in the middle would be ideal. Problem with hitting near the edge is that it isn't aligned with the handle, so will not give you a uniformity in performance. If you had a bat with a flat back, 35mm edge and spine, the bat will twist in your hands if you hit near the edge, therefore you lose the momentum into the shot. If you hit the centre though, you get a more efficient transfer of energy to the ball, so it goes further, so you may as well whack most of the wood there! People do like a big edge though!
