bat testing at Dummer last week...
« on: December 22, 2013, 10:21:42 PM »

The night was young. The rain lashed down and the Stig was back in town.

On Monday evening (i know ages ago, but there have been extenuating circumstances) Fattus Cattus, aka Brucie, Peddles, Pete "don't hassle the" hosk and the Stig met up for a gentle net session at the dummer cricket centre.

Well as gentle as a net session can be when the Stig said "bowling machine? Fast and Short please, I am expecting the call from Andy." The Cattus was happy to oblige.
Here is the evidence...

The main bats on display were the lovely Lam made by Ryan (a work of art which may have been made to my perfect specs, an Octane the stig was trialling, a hits hard storm damaged bat (looked better than most g1s) and a lovely BAS number. As you can imagine there were a huge number of bats around, but it wasn't a bat off, it was a serious net... Cough.

Here is the stig having a go with the lam...

Stig wasn't the only one on the rampage, here is the hosk...

Good leave!

firstly the winner of the evening was the BAS from Asad.

secodly, as Ryan had sent his lam down to test, here are my thoughts on it...

if I had asked for a custom bat, the specs were
perfect for me. I don't care about the other
testers! the handle was a nice oval, thickness at
the bottom good and thinner towards the top. it
could do with a better quality grip in my view, but
that is splitting hairs.
shape pickup and feel was all good. we all felt it
was a little hard, it felt like it was pressed the
same way as a GM (very similar feel to the octane)
performance was tough to judge becauce the
balls we were using on the machine was a
complete mix. Peddles used it with cricket balls
and it went well. I miscued one which felt like it
was going for six so it has it in it to be special.
I don't have anything other than positive things
to say really.

The branding is ok, I don't know
where I am with bat branding in general as I
don't like many branding ideas on bats at the
moment (salix excepted), I tend to prefer the
engraved or printed style so am not the best
person to ask. however, the swoosh down the
back is unique and will stand out, which you
want.

all in all it is a shame it is illegal really!

There are discounted net rates at Dummer the weekend after Xmas. Anyone local (ish) interested in sorting out a net? Work of a bit of turkey?

I am poo Steveo - so we had better agree that I haven't posted anything inflamatory before you man the bowling machine!

Now if we are bowling ourselves, thats different. I'm making it talk at the moment! (Mainly crap - but every little helps!)

Octane had lots of grains, but didn't feel that amazing to me.

I'll see if I can get pics of the BAS (ugly) and the Hits Hard (beautiful) up tomorrow.

I tend to agree with the summary.
The Octane was ok but felt like it needs quite a bit of playing in still - I'm sure it'll be a goer once it starts!
Brucie's BAS was a huge surprise as it had a stunning sweet spot!  :D
Ryan's lam was suberb - the handle felt fantastic, the profile impressive, the balance and pickup beautiful, and the finish was decent too! As Buzz said, it felt a little hard still but once she opens up, it will be a stonking bat! The middle felt long and very generous and if this was Ryan's first reall attempt at a lam, then this can only be described as a real success!! I am hoping to continue to play this bat in and take it to lots of nets for people to try, and see how it goes!

With the exception of my AJK and special Pod, my two faves on the night were the BAS and the Ryan lam!

And Dummer net in the new year? Sounds like a decent idea!  ;)
