Keeping in Hockey Mask
« on: January 02, 2014, 11:06:25 PM »

I've been keeping wicket for about 4 years now. I started off playing quite a low level on slow low wickets, so I often stood up to the stumps without a helmet.

I'm now playing a higher level on better pitches, so I need some protection when I stand up. Problem is, I can't keep when wearing a helmet. For some reason, the helmet goes on and suddenly my hand-eye coordination is slightly off.

I have been contemplating the Aero mask but it still seems a bit chunky. What do people think about wearing an outfield hockey mask like http://www.tk-hockey.com/shop/accessories/tk-t2-players-mask/. I saw a professional keeper wearing one (can't remember who) and I'm contemplating getting one.

Good or bad idea?

I keep in the Masuri keepers helmet which has a smaller peak and a cut out at the back to make it more comfortable when crouching...very good helmet.

You'd be better off with a more cricket oriented type of protection. Something with a grill will help protect your neck and chin.

I've tried the Masuri mask, and it is better than a standard batting helmet but I still would rather something less cumbersome. I'll admit I've not tried the Aero mask yet, so maybe it would be ok.

I have kept in an aero for a while when I kept and was fine much better than helmet for me although my Ayrtek isn't too bad as light

The hockey masks won't offer the right protection or comfort as only supposed to be worn for short periods as I've used them extensively

The first cricket box was used in 1874.  The first cricket helmet was introduced in 1974. So, it took 100 years for men to twig that their brains were also worth protecting.

The hockey mask would be good if you already have one, there is no point shelling out for one when you can get something more suitable.

It will offer extremely good protection to the face, but I agree that it may not be as comfortable if worn for a long time.

couldnt even contemplate wearing a mask of any description! I'd advise getting some practice in during the winter using a lid of any description. You'll get used to it eventually. I've been a keeper for over 20 years and until finally getting hit (2 years ago) in the head hadnt worn one as I thought it would get in the way but after a few training sessions its no longer an issue.
