He's a big lad. Hope he doesn't follow in Jake Oram and Freddie's footsteps and end up with shares in BUPA.

He's had his fair share of injuries already, but seems to be in a good spot at the moment. Please don't put him in Oram's league!….Oram sucked real bad, Anderson has some flair and skill. Our next hope behind Williamson and Boult.

Oram, BEFORE he got the first really bad injury, was class. Then he lost all his pace.

The Oram that scored the 100 at the WACA in a ODI against Australia was pretty damn good.  That summer he was the only NZ player who stood up to the Aussies.

It looks like he went a bit downhill after that.

Oram's 120-odd at the Gabba in 2004 isn't shabby.

Then again, McGrath got 61 in that game.

Ha ha the famous 61... that spurned "the bat" (I wonder if the McGrath 61 bat went on sale to the public?).

Yeah he was good for a couple of games and then went so downhill it wasn't funny. What really made me hate him though was when he was at his worst in terms of form and contributions I saw a documentary on the team and he said "As long as we have a descent start Stephen (Fleming), Dan (Vetorri) and Myself (Oram) will see us home". I almost carked it right then and there after hearing that. Rated himself when he was clearly being carried by the rest of the team. Useless!

Surely he was better than Styris?

No way. At least Styris goes boom when needed. Oram with all his size and Power never delivered.

I may have to check Statsguru on Cricinfo but I always thought Oram was a better player...

Oram:
33 Tests - 1780 runs at 36.32 with 5 hundreds and 6 fifties + 60 wickets for 1983 runs at 33.05
160 ODIs - 2434 runs at 24.09 with 1 hundred and 13 fifties + 173 wickets for 5047 runs at 29.17

Styris:
29 Tests - 1586 runs at 36.04 with 5 hundreds and 6 fifties + 20 wickets for 1015 runs at 50.75
188 ODIs - 4483 runs at 32.48 with 4 hundreds and 28 fifties + 137 wickets for 4839 runs at 35.32

Very similar numbers!  Styris better with the bat and Oram better with the ball.

The identical test 50s and 100s is particularly scary!  Have they ever been seen in the same room?

Styris played 4 less tests than Oram so with my calculations would have scored a 100 in each of the 8 innings available to him, so 13 100s instead of 5  ;)

To be fair, I think there was one tour to the West Indies I remember where Styris scored 2 hundreds and 2 fifties and was the on fire... it would be interesting to see how many of Oram's hundreds were either scored against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe (or scored at that absolute road called Seddon Park... are they ever going to put some grass on that wicket?  Or give it some bounce or turn or something?)

If we were to post a topic on the worst test venues in the world in terms of game interest Seddon Park would be up there!
