I'm still of the thought of having a couple of bats running whilst knocking in a couple ready for the season after when in a routine
I try to net with the new bats and do work on them and hav them ready for a winter tour or the following season of I can.

Is there any other different ways people knock there bats in or simply do not knock there bats in.

All I do and have done for the past 30 years is knock it in with a good hard bat mallet for as long as it takes for the grains to open up and roll the edges on the bath tub. As soon as the grains open up its straight into a game. In all this time I have never once broken or split a bat. I will also add that I give it about 3 cap fulls of linseed oil over 3 days before knocking in on the face, edges, toe and back of the bat.

Round the edges - takes about about 30 minutes. Start lightly and increase pressure slightly until they're nicely rounded.
Knock the edge of the face - spend about 45 mins -  1 hour on this, don't want edge damage.
Knock in the toe - spend a good 45 mind - 1 hour on this too, most prone to damage so needs properly preparing.
Smack the rest I the playing area - spend 30 mins on this so the face is level, as it has the most wood behind it I hit the middle a bit harder from the off.

In total I spend about 3 - 3 and a half hours knocking in a new bat to make sure it's match ready.
Then have a net against old balls, give catches ect to make sure there's no seam marks.

I I can I try and have them ready for winter training so I can use them comfortably first game of the new season.

I know about the machines I used to use the one at dummer but I find on 2 counts the season method great.

1 wife loses track and I tell here I need a new one.
2 I actually enjoy knocking in my bat and seeing it and feeling to get better knowin I have done a proper job

I will pay to have the bat knocked in if offered.

B3, vitas, ijc. Have all took my money. I then have half an hour bowling machine and off yo a match it goes.

If knocking in isn't offered.
I roll the edges with my mallets handle. Then half an hours work on the edges with the mallet followed by another roll.
30-45 mins up and down the face.
30mins on toe.
2 half an hour howling machines and then into a game it goes.

I've never been one to start soft and increase the blows. I hit them quite had to start with, and haven't had cracking issues or over denting issues as off yet while knocking in.

Usually knock my bats in using a flat mallet, round mallet and ball in a sock. Start around now and finish first game of the season for about 15 mins a day.

Best bat mallet on the market I do all my bats with this mallet and use the kitchen work top to round the edges

Machines never do an effective job on the edges in my experience, even more since the trend for flat faces. You can't substitute rolling them on a sink/bath rim and then further work with a mallet judged by eye with a machine striking blows at what it regards as a consistent surface.

I use a mallet, and always advise people to keep their bat away from a ball in a match situation, especially a new ball, for as long as possible. How many of them are as 'good' as you Dave and wait the course of maybe a season or more before blooding their new purchase is something I don't know, but i doubt many do.

I probably spend about an hour max, mainly concentrating on edges/toe after rolling the edges first.
Then I spend ages against softer balls in the nets. Eventually I get fed up and just go for it.
So roughly prep time 3/4 hours of mallet/nets.

ive never heard of using a bath/kitchen worktop for the edges.

as is this done? is it just a case of moving the bat along its length against the edge of the surface

Your bats don't last very long.
How many decent knocks do you get out of them?
