How do you grip your cricket bat ?
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:34:25 AM »

I was wondering  where people put both their hands while playing shots. I ask this because recently I started putting my left hand at the top of the bat and my right hand pretty much down the bottom end. ( Right Hander obviously). I know this is not 'textbook', but it feels very natural for me. I seem to have the control from the lower grip but some added power from the high grip too, which helps me as I do not have a high back swing.

Does anyone else have this grip ?

Sounds like you hold the bat like a right handed Graeme Smith then?

Having just youtubed his grip for a few minutes, yes, well spotted. And it seems I have a similar style to him too, very pushy with little backswing.

Does anyone change their grip depending on the bowling? I tend to hold the bat lower on the handle if a spinner is bowling and I'm having to work the ball more in gaps rather than look to hit through the inner fielders. Feel it gives a bit more control. Not saying it's right, just something I noticed I did last year.

I tend to change my grip depending on game situation.  If it's time to give it some humpty and go slogging, I'll go as high as possible on the handle.  If it's time to work the gaps, rotate strike and generally dig in I'll hold lower down.  Usually grip around the middle in ideal situations

I was told to pick up the bat like I would pick up an Axe.

Bizarre but I've heard that from two or three coaches.

I used to hold it somewhere in the middle of the handle.. but lately have started holding it right at the bottom of the handle. Must say this has improved my horizontal batting prowess.. play the cut and the pull a lot better now. Maybe my bat is heavy for me and hence getting the comfort (bat feels lighter) now after holding it lower?

If I'm looking to basically have a slog or in the situation where I need to give it a hit I tend to hold the bat as high up the handle as possible but if I'm batting normally I tend to hold it in the middle.

I hold it about mid way with 1 to 2 inch gap between hands.
