New BS 7928:2013 Safety Standard
« on: January 09, 2014, 09:28:15 PM »

Whilst helmets will still be tested by using a drop test to ensure forces above a specified threshold dont pass through them to the wearers headform inside if struck by a ball they will also undergo a NEW penetration test as part of the new BS 7928:2013 standard.

Drop Test

Helmet 1 EPS Crown 2 Trial 2

Penetration Test

Trial 1-Ball Penetration (Adult Size)

This combination of test will ultimately lead to safer helmets being provided to players who choose to wear a helmet when playing cricket. Here at Ayrtek Cricket our research has proven that our range of adidas #adipower helmets excel under both of these test conditions, its time to invest in your safety in a product that has been designed specifically for cricket with the future in mind.

It's been published yes mate but rather oddly with the Bsi you have to pay to obtain it, although you prob get the just of it from the info already discussed on the forum over the last few months.

Standards can be viewed for free on the computer systems at most public libraries I believe.

Just to update on this as i have emailed the BSI to clarify and had the below response back....

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your email.

The standard was published at the end of December and the six month supersession period is now in effect (until 30 June 2014). The new version of the standard can now be tested against and head protectors which pass the tests can claim compliance with BS 7928:2013.

Once again, thank you for your input to the standard and all the best for 2014.

Kind regards,

Adam

So on 30th of June 2014 what happens?

Only complaint gear to be sold?

Or

Only complaint gear to be manufactured, but all non compliant gear in shop can still be sold on?

I can only speak from our point of view as a company, having meet with our insurance broker yesterday to review our annual insurance policy.

We would find it difficult to obtain public liability insurance if selling a product after the 30th June that doesnt comply to the new standard. Therefore we would only manufacture and sell products that comply to the latest standard meaning we can gain cover in the event that the worst case scenario occurs.

This might prove an interesting read for those of you that wanted to know a bit more about the new standard test method etc.

This was the paper written by the student that took on the role of coming up with the method as his final year project at l'boro.

Tom,
The current ECB Safety Guidance on the Wearing of Cricket Helmets by Young Players references the old 1998 British Standard when advising the guidelines for juniors wearing helmets. Are you aware of any talk of updating these guidelines in light of the the new BS for helmets?

Thanks for the reply, so potentially depending on the wording of the revised guidelines from the ECB,  there could be a larger and more immediate impact on junior helmet wearing than the adult market. As clubs would be duty bound to ensure all juniors have a new Bs helmets as per the new guidelines, whereas adults can in effect wear anything.

Tom - now that the test machines / facilities are finally available at Durham, have the Ayrtek helmets now officially passed and been certified with the new standard?
