Hey Guys,

There has been a change in my travel plans (my mate has bailed out on the trip), so now I'm considering playing a full season in the UK!

I'm not 100% on what my plans will be, but there is anyone that knows of a club that would be happy to have me and possibly help me in terms of a job and pointing me in the right direction, it would be great to hear from you!

I understand that restrictions on overseas players are generally pretty tight and that most clubs look for a 'pro', but if your club is looking for a reasonable player (I don't know how the standard in Australia compares to the UK, once again if anyone could help...) then please feel free to contact me :)

Apologies for the essay!

My club plays a decent level of friendly cricket where there is obviously no overseas quota. If you're stuck for a club and desperate for some games then you're more than welcome to get involved with us, just north of London. I can't help you with the job though...

Mate are you going over on a visa? I went on a youth mobility visa. Be careful going over there if you intend to play cricket and aren't on a sports visa or anything. If your looking to play a full season id get a youth mobility visa (as you can only stay for a few months otherwise) and just tell immigration when you land you are travelling/looking to pick up the odd job. Don't go taking a full cricket kit or anything!

Or do you have a British Passport? In which case all the above is null and void :)

I'm not sure what I'll do with accommodation. I was hoping to probably get a job over there and possibly rent a room somewhere.

I don't have a UK passport, so I'll need to apply for a youth mobility visa so that I can play the full season hopefully and get some work.

And in regards to my cricket, I'm primarily a batsmen these days, but I do bowl leg spin which has been my main skill in the past but a bad shoulder has reduced the amount that I bowl, though I would love to get back to focusing on it instead of only bowling a few overs a match!

Why not?

The only issue with sports on a YM visa would be if the person concerned was intending to play professionally, which is not the case here.  Playing as an amateur for an amateur club - the kind of stuff normally done by someone on sports visitor conditions - would be fine.

You are welcome to come up to Glasgow and as there are many jobs in bars etc, you'd be fine... We could even line you up with accommodation though you'd have to pay it lol

I have heard stories of Aussie lads going over with full kit to be asked what would you need this here and put in the next flight home. I'm sure there are loads who don't get pulled up either, certainly didn't happen to me

You are leaving it quite tight I must say. Most clubs playing the standard of cricket where an overseas is required/looked at will be well into their pre season preparation by now. my outdoor season starts with a friendly on April 5th, weather permitting.

Try going through an agency, such as cricx. They have profiles for amateur players travelling on youth mobility visas, I don't know the success rate in terms of placing these players, or the costs involved, but it is worth a go.

The later you leave it, the less you can start to ask for in terms of job/accommodation etc, as there will be fewer and fewer options available, unless as does happen with some clubs, they are let down last minute and need to find someone very quickly.

I know I've left it quite late, this has occured as my other plans failed to come into fruition.

I'm not seeking to play an incredible standard of cricket as I wouldn't want to be a clubs key overseas player, as I think I would fail to meet their expectations. I'm keen to play cricket but I would be happy to play lower XI cricket if that's where my skills are best suited.

Also, I'm  not solely relying on a club to find me work or accommodation, although it would be incredibly helpful, I can always look elsewhere.

Also I feel as if cricx is more aimed at gun players who are looking to play 1st XI premier league or a similar standard, a standard at which I don't think I could excel in!

I think you're probably taking things out of context - those lads have either not told the truth on arrival (if they've said they were on a couple of weeks holiday it would be a valid question as to why they'd carry cricket gear) or there were other reasons why they caused suspicion (spent excessive periods in the UK previously, admitted they were getting paid to play as an amateur).  I seem to recall Mitchell Starc was refused for lack of a work permit when he came over a couple of years back.

Well either way I wouldnt take kit over - not simply because of this, but purely because there is a plethora of kit at your fingertips at much much cheaper prices than you can get here in OZ. I went over with nothing and came back with half a dozen bats!!
