All the fuss about county contracts and IPL, and none of the England guy's apart from KP get selected. Luke Wright seems pretty disgruntled.
Maybe the combination of a poor ashes, t20 and odi series in Australia and SA/Aus coach's the reason why.

Not picking some of the international quicks like Lee, tait, nannes, mcclenaghan, philander, McLaren, Bollinger is a mistake, given half of the IPL is in SA

Shamelessly stolen from someone on twitter.

"Do they not show the big bash in India?"

Ben dunk top scorer, sold for base price at 3rd time of being actioned.

Chris Lynn, 2nd top sixes hitter and destroyer off England,a old at base price 2nd time through

Craig Simmons, top 6hitter, and two tons in bbl. unsold at 3laks(seemed cheap)

Luke wright, 3rd top scorer, 170sr in big bash, allrounder good fielder. Unsold

Alex hales, ranked second t20 batsmen, bbl was great just under 200 runs but at a 160sr.

All the above on Indians wickets against Indian medium pace bowlers would excel. Yet they seem to have been ignored. Very strange auction. Very strange choices with strange prices.

And a few squads with holes in it.

The problem that I saw last time was senior folks sitting in the dug out as only 4 foreign players can be selected in the 11.
That's the reason why squads have been trimmed to between 21-24 players mostly - according to Tom Moody on television.

The English would not have been viable picks due to the fact they can't play the whole tournament. If we are honest, Hales didn't shine with the bat in the BBL or the internationals in Australia really.

I personally don't think there's harm in having 5 or 6 in your squad. It'll be good to help the young Indians, plus rotation can help. Or if one is out of for or god forbid gets injured!

Say you have gayle open, what's happens if he has to runa one I. The forts game and ping, hamstring gone.
Why not have hales or wright sat on the bench just incase? No one bid on them, so at base price it's a good back up,

Instead they go from gayle, to an Indian that has only opens a few times at school.......

But having said that, it was an entire team selection and it's hard they want to build a team for the tournament.
This team is locked in for a few years now. So they will release they are missing in some areas.
So next years ipl auction will just have a few players in, say about 20/30 and hales/wright will have a better chance being picked up,

If it was a small auction this year, I believe they would have been selected.

Spot on. Teams have decided to cut the squad sizes and decided not to pay players to sit on the bench like the previous 6 editions.
1 less team also means that less spots for foreign players and the big teams had spent most of their money. Can't buy players if there is no money left in the budget

Teams have gone with tested players. would argue that hales and wright are poor players of spin, so that's why not selected.

Not sure that is true apart from Bell. Apart from KP, Hales/Samit have an agreement with Notts that if they are picked up for a certain price they can play. Didn't Bopara and Morgan do similar last year?

For the most part anybody in danger of getting a test place won't be in the auction in the first place ie. Buttler/Morgan

Nice to see Ross Taylor snapped up by Delhi again.

They've also bagged James Neesham.

The IPL has very little to do with logic or common sense and I think it shows in the standard of cricket. The Eng t20 and Big Bash are probably of a higher standard, particularly when you look at the home grown players. Even some of the overseas players are poor buys imho but in a non-english coaching setup what can you expect? Even in 2010 when England were t20 world champions nobody except KP/Morgan got a look in.

Surprised that you think the English t20 competition is of a higher standard. English t20 teams that were in previous editions of the champions league looked well below the standard of other teams.
Way too many teams in the English t20 means that the standard is pretty poor.
Hardly any international cricketers playing let along England players.

I think what he was saying is, if you ignore the overseas pros and internationals. The English and aus sides are off a higher standard.
Which I agree.

Problem with cl t20 is the ipl sides right in the contract that they must represent them. So Somerset who had a good tournament, were without pollard who played for Mumbai,
And last cl t20 the Perth scorchers lost six players, not just there two overseas, but 4 Australians to the ipl sides in the tournament. Which outs them on the back foot. And means you can say "India is better because Mumbai win" like you can say in football "Spanish league is high standard cos Barcelona won!"

Better 'local talent' (questionable) doesn't mean better standards...a team is a team; irrespective of local or international players. English players aren't good enough compared to other international players and hence are not in demand. KP and  Eoin Morgan are the only players with international demand. Compared to previous IPL seasons, this season is especially tough for players because of the choice on offer to the franchises. Only the best; or the ones with the X-factor stood a chance.

The only surprise for me was Luke Wright not getting picked..rest never stood a chance.

Yes the domestic English players might be stronger for certain big counties such as Somerset, Hampshire, Nottinghamshire. But there are a fair share of poor counties such as Glous, Worcestshire, Glamorgan, Derbyshire etc. The competition is only as strong as the weak teams. Too many teams in the English t20 makes it a weaker standard.
The English competition would be far stronger if there are fewer counties playing and more participation from England international players (probably not possible given the schedule)

Not just talking about IPL teams, I would probably rate the NZ t20 competition higher than the English just because the participation of NZ international players and fewer teams.

If there was no quota on Indian players would the make up of the teams have changed?  I think so.  If the whole idea of the IPL is to be the 'premier' global T20 competition then it is failing.

Imagine if the EPL side could only field 4 non English players... the competition would not be the global phenomenon it is now.

You cannot tell me some 17 year old who has played 2 first class games in India is going to be a better player than Luke Wright, Alex Hales or Craig Simmons?

A fair few careers have started from people being plucked from T20 obscurity. David Warner and Glenn Maxwell are two examples.
