Shorter blade-t20 bats. Do any pros actually use them.
« on: February 19, 2014, 07:18:32 AM »

There seems to be so many on the market.

Black cat joker-joker extreme
Affinity toro
Mongoose mmi3-core
Lekka Rdx
Newbery uzi
Laver and wood t20

Etc etc etc

But do pros use them or are they just a gimmick for us? Like a placebo effect?
I know Hayden used the mmi3 once in an ipl game, plus the Sri Lankans used the core model in the t20 World Cup and a few one days.
But they were a few years ago? Any current pro use one now? Anyone noticed a pro in the bigbash or other t20 comps with a bat that looks a shorter blade but stickered up as owt else

Personally I like them, I like heavy bats with a bottom heavy feel, so to me these bats feel good. But as there all advertised with spiel like "clear long on and off with ease" " t20 is all about hitting boundaries, and this bat does it easily" etc.

Surely if that be true, atleast a small percentage of pros would be using them?

No idea if any of the pros actually use them except for Gareth Andrew and a few others who use the Mongoose.

I use a similar bat similar to the BC Joker that suits me down to the ground and use it in all formats. I have a harrow sized blade(width and height) with a longer handle so that it's the length of a SH bat and a flat face - I'm not too fussed about edge size or anything like that as long as the sweetspot isn't too low.

Andre Russell used a shorter blade stickered up, but you're right - not many pros do. And not many pros want to.

Watling uses a shorter blade for all formats, and apparently Jimmy Neesham was using one of his short blades when he scored his ton yesterday!

Interesting I know I few do.

I wouldn't ever consider talking one into a test against  Johnson/steyn personally,

But a tired Indian attack? I suppose if he was counter attacking then yes why not. Neesham is a tall man though.

As for watling? Is it because he's not that tall and prefers a more academy size time bat? Or does he really just prefer the feel of a short blade?

Right off to be sad and study pictures.

I've not been on the forum long enough to know if it was mentioned previously? But what do you do? You always seem to talk like you work with the pros. Or are a pro cricketer yourself?( as opposed to others that try,but come off as talking bs)

Out of interest, How tall are you Matt?

I'm 6'2 and have a BC Joker Extreme on the way and I'm a little worried now.

Im just under 6ft tall and used a BC Joker Extreme for a full season, scored loads of runs with it. They go like trains. Edit - need to learn how to read. Not sure how you will go with it. I tend to choke my bats and did the same with the Joker, didnt find it too short holding it this way.

I'm an awful cricketer, but I used to run Production at Mongoose. From launch through to 2011.

I'm 6.1. I used a mongoose core in all formats for a full season. No issue, and regularly use a mmi3 in t20s, again no issue. I switched bAck to regular blade bats as opened for last two years. But thankfully we have a second opener back in our side so will be batting back at 4 and 5. And I'll probably switch back

The core just isn't a big enough bat for me, compared to today's bats So I have a few short blades on the way to try out. A joker rep by rk. And some second hand takes on them.

I find the issue most at my club have when they try to use them is where they place the re hands. Even though on a regular sh they grip at the top. Give them a mmi3/joker they suddenly grip down the handle near to the shoulders.
And then complain it doesn't feel right?? I've tried explaining but it goes on deaf ears.

How was the customer service at black cat? I struggled for replies to emails, and the ones that wee replied to not helpful, and if I organised to phone, they never answered. So I went elsewhere.

Good to know? Did you enjoy it? Will tank you wo for my mmi3, it is one of the orginals(bought a few weeks after launch) cost me 292 quid. But is a gunn bat. And unfortunately very used. But the mmi3 I've used since(all pre 2011) are not the quality or same feel as the original I bought. I do wonder if the changed pre suction methods, or handle design, or quality off wood after.

Probably because at the start of production all Mongoose bats where made by Hunts County, then now they've changed to a different supplier. Also Peter Trego used the nemesis a few times last season

Launch models and into early 2010 (pre-IPL) were exclusively Hunts. Even the Kashmir bats were shaped there. After that they were pretty much all made by SS or by another English batmaker.

Quality of wood shouldn't have changed, but methods of manufacture, handle design and the pressing will have differed.
