using double-twine instead of extra grips
« on: February 19, 2014, 11:54:20 AM »

heard that some people have a second layer of binding instead of using two grips (to avoid slippage between two grips). makes sense.. but just wondering if anyone here has done this? does it stiffen up the handle too much? i know there are people who swear by the extra flex one would get if they REMOVE the binding from their handles, so i'm guessing those guys would certainly not recommend adding a second layer of binding?

I had this done, well Jake at Vitas got it done for me as the handle was too thin on my GN E41, I used it once before and once since and literally know no differance other than how the size of the handle feels, it hasn't lost any "feel" through the bat, and certainly doesn't feel any stiffer.

I haven't done the double twine but I do use (Ice)hockey tape on the handles of my match bats. If the handle is too thick I'll take the twine off and then put tape on otherwise tape on top of the twine. I don't use it for thickness reason but instead I like the feel of the handle better (Feels a bit more stiffer) and also when you put a grip on top of the tape it never moves as the tape is fabric and a little sticky on the outside as well

I am not a fan of flexible handles as in my head I keep thinking its going to snap any moment.

I had two grips before and two grips after, so in that respect I couldn't say, but certainly better than adding either an extra thick grip or another grip to make it three grips. I personally feel it has also helped retain the semi oval handle as I think this can be lost (if you've got one or oval even) if you put additional or thicker grips on.

yes, that much is true. i currently have to be careful, and align the grips, such that that extra bit of rubber inside the grip, runs along the top of the handle.. otherwise the ovalness goes away.

not sure if this is an easy question to answer, but the extra thickness from a second layer of twine - what grip's thickness would that be similar too? I currently use three GN Legend grips on some bats, and two octupus grips on others.

Out of interest - any current ebay or similar listings for the 'correct' twine? I've searched the forum a couple of times, but no current links.

Got a bat where its started to unravel quite a bit, so was going to re-bind it.

I have seen Nylon Bat handle binding listed on eBay  ideally you need to get binding made of traditional cotton as it is stronger and easier to work with.

James Laver told me that in his experience doubling the twine would result in a much stiffer handle and less whip in the handle when I suggested it to him.
