Return after surgery /foot protection
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:13:44 PM »

Last October I had midfoot surgery and after being non weight bearing till January I've got the aircast boot on which I hope will be coming off next week and I'll be able to wear a trainer for the 1st time in 4 months. Now this will sound daft but is there anything on the market I can cover my forefoot with so I can net?  I'm wondering if there is anything that a hockey keeper has on their feet or do they just wear massive leg guards that cover them. I remember how Alec Stewart used to have a plastic /fibreglass type shell over his 1st 2 fingers on his gloves on his bottom hand. I'm basically thinking of something like that I can strap under my foot just to add some protection on my forefoot  until the start of the season. As I've had 3 screws put in I don't really want to risk it in training /nets. As I said this may sound a little daft but any help /reccomendations will be appreciated.

yeah, that's the best thing I've seen so far. All the others I've seen had the shin protection attached. This could be better than a plasticy type I was thinking of as it could possibly shatter.I doubt I would also be able to have a shoe on in it so maybe it would have to be a plasticy type thing wrapped over

yeah possibly, unless you get a really big size? the hockey keeper protection wouldnt work, as the boots are enormous and would not fit a pad over them, so you couldnt bat in it, so maybe one of these and a plastic layer too as you say, not sure where you could find one tho..

What about getting George from Stretton fox to make you a foot sock with Stretton armour on? Would be thin and mould to your foot!

From my days as a hockey goalie at least 15 years ago, perhaps something like this would help:

Obo are very expensive but I'm sure there are cheaper options, just google Hockey goalkeeping equipment or something.

Ive had a week of playing around with this.Ive managed to get to this....
It might need a little more curving but the overall protection and the fact it covers and stays on the foot is great.Obviously its only for nets which I may be able to start soon but cant play properly for a few months yet

Wouldn't it be better to wait until your foot is ready to play/net?

I agree completely.  I screwed my ankle ligaments about 2 months ago.  Its still slightly bruised and I can't run on it.  As a batsman keeper not ideal.

Been going to nets the last two weeks, haven't picked up a bat and taken up bowling a bit of spin to pass time.  Giving it every chance to recover, no point in spending 2 months bored waiting for it to heal then screwing it up for a net and spending another two months watching from the sidelines in the summer.

You could get a dozen of tennis balls and work on balance and body alignment for a start. Even pro's do that

Personally, I think you are a bit of an idiot for trying to get into nets and bat when you clearly and fit for it. In spite of all the stuff you are talking about doing, it will only take one mistake for you to undo everything that the surgery is there for. The surgery was clearly major for you to have to spend three months with it non-weight bearing.

This is one of those occasions where, as little as you may like it, you should let time do its job and not put something like this at risk. Follow your doctor's advice, and frankly, whilst we know you are eager, don't be a fool!
