After a year away on a placement year playing cricket for Cheltenham it made me realise unfortunately how unprofessional my club is regardless of the league we play in (WARCL DIV 1) been going there my whole life from watching my dad play 1st team cricket to playing juniors and now playing 1st team cricket myself. Too many people not taking it seriously and the club has gone backwards since  my dad  and other people his age left the committee . Going to see how things go this season but will find it very difficult to move clubs leaving a lot of friends behind even though it's becoming like a pub team (not trying to offend people that play cricket just for a jolly here)  enjoyment or standard is the question I'm asking myself and unfortunately our standards are slowly slipping.

Kind of have the same issue with my club. While the drive to win is still there, not enough players are dedicated and people are leaving. Part of me would like to turn things around for them but on a personal level the only sensible option is to go

My view. If you are in your late teens/early twenties and want to move in order to play at a better level then moving clubs is a good thing.
After the age of about 25 the main reason for moving is that you have fallen out with your club. I am always weary of players that turn up at pre season nets having played for 2/3 clubs in the last 4 years. 9 times out of 10 they turn out to be a problem and add no value before moving on again.

I think you should think what can you do to help your club instead of jumping ship. As I did with my club.

I think that's easier said than done in most situations, it's been tried at my club and people just aren't bothered. As much as I get on with my team mates I just wish there was a bit more desire as we can definitely be playing at a higher level.

Lots of reasons to move though..

New to an area
Looking to a higher standard
Looking for an easier standard
Maybe they just didn't feel at home
Moving jobs, so as they want to play as close to home as possible rather than live one side of town and play the other (much easier for post match stagger home

Lots of legit reasons

(Speaking as someone who has moved clubs a few times in a small space of time - hell, for one club I used to drive for 2 hours just to play home games, then of we played teams like Peterborough town we'd have another drive on top etc.. So isn't lazyness or lack of dedication etc)

Higher standard over 25, probably not good enough.
Easier standard, probably drop a level at your own club.
Didn't feel at home, means you have moved recently and it us likely to happen at the next club you go to.
Moving jobs, same as new to area if that is the case.

This is an amateur game for 99% of us on the forum. Be part of your club, make a difference at your club and support it.

Defo don't agree with this. People can improve if they put the time and effort in, regardless of age. The rest I agree in principle with though.

It's a fair point. Probably 30 is the point where it is unlikely that you will improve enough to warrant changing clubs in order to play a higher standard.

35+ maybe, but again, if they are doing proper training and not just a bit of slap and tickle and a few club nets then even at 30 people can improve. The biggest thing really at 35+ is fitness! not ability. If they are fit enough to play and move in the field at 40 then they can still play. It's probably not regular to find 25+ players looking to train that hard though in fairness.

Agree with most of what Stevo us saying and also with ProC.

My club had been struggling for few years, I did everything in my capacity to help keep things going but after a fall out with manager last year I decided to call it a day. I have 3,4 other clubs who play a better standard and are happy to accommodate me. Since then my old club has been very nice to me asking me to have a rethink and let bygones be bygones.

My club has a very poor set up and only just managed to get by through last few seasons. Only one team, struggle to get 11 players on most weekends,  no proper ground, etc etc. The new clubs I have been netting with have great set up.

Moving clubs due to having relocated over the winter. Moved from Blankney CC up in Lincolnshire to Truro CC down in Cornwall (bit of a trek, I think you'll all agree...). Had to move with my parents, but hoping to go into the RAF at some point so I'll probably be spending a couple of seasons around Bedfordshire and then back up to Lincolnshire, so plenty of awkward nets knowing nobody for me!

I've recently relocated, and while I'm happy to do the hour and a bit drive back to my old club for this season at least, there may come a time when I need to find a more local club. However, I'm wary of what sort of club to try - it seems to easy to overestimate your own ability and potentially look at a fool at the first net - which can be an awkward experience anyway.
