Can batting gloves be machine washed?
« on: March 09, 2014, 07:30:51 PM »

Got a pair of Gray Nicolls Oblivion Test gloves that are a bit on the sweaty and dirty side, this may sound silly but can they be put through the washing machine or is there and alternative way of cleaning them?
Cheers

Absolutely not in the washing machine.  Soak them in the bath overnight with some washing powder.

or if the palms have gone stiff and slippery, just rough the palms up with some sandpaper.

Won't that just dry out the leather ruining them?

When I've washed gloves in the past, I treat them with couch cream that you'd put on a leather sofa.  Makes them supple again

Tried it with a pair of my pittard gloves, basically because they were knackered anyway. They will come up clean but be very stiff and eventually just rip to shreds.

I would suggest some leather wipes/spray and a cloth.

Personally I think this goes in the same bucket as putting your pads in the bath.

It might work, but the odds are it will ruin your kit.

If your gloves are knackered then they are knackered

I lent my gloves to a mate a couple of years ago. He top edged an attempted sweep into his helmetless chin and split it open and then decided the use my gloves to try stop the bleeding. When I got them back I put them in the washing machine (they were practically ruined anyway) and they shrunk and went rock hard.

Washing machines are not for kit.

Makes sense to me!

I bought a pair of gloves from a forum member on here (who must sweat a ridiculous amount) the gloves were supple but the inside smelt quite strongly! No amount of airing outside seemed to fix that!

Saddle soap ?. I have previously used sofsole shoe cleaner foam and soft bristled toothbrush and let it air dry, followed by using a conditioner.
