SS Limited Edition 'S' Logo Help
« on: April 09, 2014, 07:27:26 PM »

Hi everyone,

I'm a first time blogger so go easy. I have recently started playing the wonderful game of cricket. This Xmas I was determined to purchase my first ever bat. With it being the festive period the major retailers such as Romeda and Barrington Sports were closed. My impatience took me to the only store that was open in the area Lukeys Sports in Preston. I'd definitely recommend the store Lukey was a great chap who certainly knew his cricket. He stocked a range of bats from Addidas,Salix, Spartan, Millichamp & Hall, SF and SS. The SS bats caught my eye one in particular (Photo's provided) The design was slick, despite a few bubbles in the stickers. It has 13 straight grains and what attracted me most was the excellent pick up and ping when I gave it an in-store trial.

I bought the bat and Lukey threw in some SS test standard gloves for free total price £250.00.

I'm posting because I'm completely happy with the bat but something is niggling at me. As you'll see the bat has a slanted 'S' embossed on the edges and the back. Every other bat I have seen from the SS or Ton range ALL have TON embossed on them. I haven't seen another bat apart from mine (and a couple on ebay from a site that looks dodgy) with the slanted 'S'

Can anybody explain this for me please. The bat is made from English Willow not Kashmir and the shop I bought it from seemed perfectly legit (They had a range of Ton bats with TON on them)

I tweeted TonUK and was told it was not an official product but the quality seems to good for it not to be.

Can you solve this mystery?

Thanks

From my understanding this is something to do with the ICC saying you can't have two brans logos on a bat.
As TON is also the logo for UK bats, players using a TON bat with their sponsors stickers can no longer show the TON logo.

As such the slanted S is the new logo, as you can leave the S uncovered and everyone will know its a TON bat.

I'm sure i've seen that somewhere, but equally, i might be talking a load of testicles...

Upload them to photobucket.com or a similar site, then copy&paste the section where it looks like [ IMG ] asdasdd.jpg [ /img ] (with no spaces in the brackets)

SS started to use slanted S on the edges but i haven't seen many with this, your bat is definitely a SS product if it has slanted S.

The slanted S, Ton bats look better in my opinion and are definitely legit! I think what TON might have meant when you tweeted them is it might not be part of the UK Ton range? Don't worry about it's authenticity as it's cam from lukeys a trusted chap and I've seen a few players use the slanted S ton bats

100% genuine.

I have seen loads of SS Ton bats with this brand. Some people have said its a pro brand, some that it's a change of brand logo, some just because SS can...

There has obviously been the branding change because of the Surridge/Sareen Sport lawsuit.

All Sareen Sports bats with the SS stickers should have been returned to the business if not sold by Feb (something like that anyway!). Retailers can no longer hold stock of these with the SS labels.

You will only see stickers with the word TON on now in the UK.

Hope that clears up some of the misconceptions.

I thought the outcome of the court case was that SS gear couldnt be sold with the SS logo on it anymore? Hence why they moved to the TON branding. I also though anything with SS on it is either older stock or sourced directly from India (sounds like an odd thing to say considering they are an Indian company)

100% legit, as everyone has said. SS branded bats aren't meant to be sold in the UK by retailers though, you're only meant to be able to get them directly from India. (Unless you deal with an agent of some sort) That being said, Lukey's was a forum sponsor here, and from my dealings with him, is a trustable retailer. :)

OK, thanks for answering my questions and allaying my fears, I can use  it now with conviction. For the record I wasn't doubting Lukey he was a genuinely good chap I was just curious about the slanted 'S' I was eager to see it in the recent T20 World Cup but didn't and couldn't find it online. I did try the SS website but seems it hasnt been updated since about 1997 :D

I am surprised that the SS Ton LE sells for £250.00....!!Obviously I am not that knowledgeable about prices in UK but it sells for around $300 in the US.
