What do you guys think of this hunts county?
« on: April 11, 2014, 01:39:18 AM »

A buddy of mine picked this up from a Singh sporting store for 165 USD.

Its a hair below 3lb, what do you guys think?

I think it's too heavy for the size and I have my doubts about authenticity.

He just sent me the pics, will see it in person at friendly game this weekend.

To me, it doesn't matter how good you are. Sport is all about playing and competing. Whatever you do in cricket and in sport, enjoy it, be positive and try to win.

Profile & handle shape suggests it is Hunts but it is too small for the weight, maybe a low density cleft.

Stickers are mid-late nineties. Shoulders look like Hunts. I had a Newbery Zeus which weighed 3lb 2oz and was a similarly small size. Higher density clefts generally result in smaller sized bats that hit the ball equally hard. Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with it. Just an older bat from before the times when a big bat meant you could hit the ball further, honest. ;)

Like Tim says, that could easily be 3 lb-plus. This bat doesn't look a monster but it weighed in at 3lb back in the day.

Dunno if it's real or not but I love the look of it.

I'm 99% certain it's real. The shoulders give it away.

I think it looks real but it is older. I suspect they have had that bat sitting around for an age!!
It's very much an older profile and as Tim said, the stickers are older!!
It looks as though its been in a time capsule for 15 years and is now unleashed!
I guess it all boils down to three issues......
1. Does it feel ok to your mate? Weight, pickup, feel?
2. Does it respond well?
3. Is he happy with the price?

It may turn out to be an absolute rocket! Although I'm not sure I'd be happy with the price paid for an older bat!

I don't know about you Pete, but I have certainly seen these, and played against people with these! Many around in the late 90s.

The reason those are monsters are;

1. None of this 'low density willow' rubbish - This was best looking, best performing NOT biggest.
2. Pressed for durability, as well as performance - Why would you not? Returns mean money!
3. None of that CNC technology! All by hand, eye and some bloke with a fag and a flat cap... and probably a whippet p*ssing on the cleft...

My only worry is the age of the bat. Probably been sitting around somewhere for 15 years - drying out.

Make sure it is completely oiled and knocked in properly before use and hope the handle glue is still upto it!

... And avoid cheap rock hard cricket balls initially too... ;)

I think there should be a rule that if someone turns up to nets with a SD Slazenger OR a Splay OR a sub-continental ball they picked up for 1 rupee on their holidays - You should be able to implement a 22yrd running punch to the face.

If that were the case, less of my bats would have broken over the years!

To him if feels good and it pings well. Told him to oil that bat last night.

About the quality of the ball, most of the people around here use subcontinental SG cricket ball.

When you live in USA you enjoy cricket in whatever form it comes in without any fuss over quality of cricket, equipment or field.

But thanks for confirming the authenticity, it'll put his mind to ease (won't tell him how old it could be).

SG and SS make a good ball don't worry about them breaking bats.
